What should I look for when buying a dishwasher?

And how expensive are they, generally? Think I could install one with no prior dishwasher installation experience?

Thanks bros.

COULD you install one? Perhaps. You DO have a chain saw...:p

Are you replacing an existing dishwasher? If so, it's a piece of cake. If not...

As for expensive...the better quality machines are expensive...anywhere from $700 up...and $1000 isn't unusual.

Keep in mind that many brands are now made by the same company...and better quality isn't necessarily going to accompany higher price. You will (usually) get more features with a higher-priced d/w, but not necessarily better quality.
If you buy at Sears, remember that Kenmore is just the Sears brand-name...their appliances are all made by other companies and re-branded. (some are as good as their name-brand counterparts, some are better, some are worse)

Installing is a snap. The most difficult part is hooking up the electric line because usually you have to have the unit three quarters of a ways pushed in and then lay on the ground to hook everything up. This is because most homebuilders don't provide enough slack for you to pull the electric line out far enough to install before pushing the unit in and under the countertop.

i have a $1000 bosch, no complaints except the flaky drying. bought it because it was whisper quiet.

$500 dish washers i've seen make so much noise you can hear them all over the house

In my experience with dishwashers - I've bought half a dozen over the years, only one very broad rule of thumb has emerged for me:

In general, more expensive = quieter when operating.

YMMV.

Or the floor, if it's an indoor installation.

Installation is easy. Just look at reviews to see what people say. Some dishwashers clean well and others don't. I'm pretty happy with our stainless steel GE. Got it brand new on craigslist for $300. I think they sell for $900 at lowes.

Anything NOT Bosch.

Agreed, I was at a local hardware store browsing, when a customer came in to speak with one of the staff about his Bosch dishwasher. Apparently they take these specialized soap cartridges that they don't sell in regular stores.

The Staff said he would have to order it from a supplier in Europe and it would cost over $70 to ship a case that he would have to buy flat out; since he had no shelf space.

the customer is an idiot, they take any kind of soap

unless the local hardware store sold him a special european version and it still makes the customer an idiot. avoid small local stores for purchases like this

Why not Bosch? According to Consumer Reports Whirlpool and Bosch are the 2 most reliable brands. We are suddenly looking for a dishwasher as well and there are a couple of Bosch models and Whirlpool models I have looked at.

I have a Kenmore Elite that I bought from Sears and love it. It is the absolute quietest dishwasher that I have ever had.

Why is it suddenly?

big complaint with sears is the $300 warranty. for my bosch it was $99 at lowes. people on the consumer reports forums said to buy the warranty because the circuit boards are prone to breaking due to the steam and heat and that you may not be able to get a new one after the model year is up. or it may cost hundreds of $$$ and a long wait.

the only complaint i knew about was the drying. they dont dry as well as others but that is because they have their own method called condensation drying which uses less electricity. my guess is mine costs $10 a month for me for 1 wash on weekdays and 3 washes per day on weekends

i bought new appliances in 2010, spent $3000 at once and bought it all from lowes. only reason was i wanted the warranty only on the dishwasher and lowes was only $99
