I need ample storage...somewhere in the range of 250 to 400 or so. What specs are important and what do you think i should get if it is mostly for data storage? Also, whats a good price per gb of space nowadays? Thanks guys

For extra storage, i just look for best deal i can get...anything .50/gb or below is pretty good deal....comp has this Seagate 300GB IDE drive on sale for 99.00 after rebate...seagate has a very good balance of speed, runs cool and pretty quiet and best off all has 5year warranty

would you say seagate is prolly the best choice? I havent had a hd crash yet in any of my comps but my buddy had one and it seems scary:(...i wouldnt mind paying a little more to have something with less chance of crashing. I backup my stuff, but its still a hassle...

I don't think brand matters that much....luck of the draw, certain models may fail more than others...I personally prefer Seagates.
I too, knock on wood, haven't had a hard drive failure in my systems either...but i wouldn't hesitate to buy other brands, such as Maxtor, WD and Fujitsu.
Also, if the manufacturer has a warranty of 5 years on a HD, thats a big plus in my mind of getting a quality HD, that will last.

what i look for in a hard drive:
* SATA
* 16mb cache
* benchmarks

both seagate and western digital are good. for 400gb, i would get the western digital with 16mb cache

i'm with ya there.

Agreed.

As posted above. I'd look for a drive with a 16MB cache. I can't recommend a brand at this time. All I can say is that I'm upset with Maxtor, and happy with WD.
