What should I install on a new computer?

I recently purchased a computer from an ATOT'er who gave me a great deal. I put on XP and Office but now I'm drawing a blank as to what else he may need. What are some good programs that are free?
Is there a Quicktime installer that doesn't require being hooked up to the internet? (He's on dialup)

Thank You!

CdEx 1.50
Winamp 2.91 or Foobar
Some sort of virus protection
Trillian?
Mozilla 1.4 or Firebird/Thunderbird
Ad-Aware 6.181
Nero (if you have CD-R/RW)
DVD Software (if you have a player)
And dont forget to update drivers and windows.
Thats all I can think of for the moment.

You wont need a popup stopper if you dont use IE. Go for Mozilla Firebird. I havent really seen any benefit of using ZA, though. If I dont have a physical firewall, I wouldnt bother. Just seems like more trouble than its worth. And WMP 9? Didnt that include that DRM stuff in it? There are many programs better than that. But if those programs work better for you, then there's nothing wrong with that. I just prefer the alternatives. :)

Bah...IE is just fine...and with Pop-up Stopper I've never had a problem.

WMP 9 is a pretty good media player. I prefer Media Jukebox but most of the good features get disabled after 30 days and I'm not paying $30 or so just to play MP3s. ;)

There are A LOT of things that are free that do that just fine.

Winamp
Foobar
Sasami 2k

just to name a few...

StartupCPL. It's a great little program that lets you control everything that starts up on your comouter through your control panel. Plus it's free.

Back when I used my laptop as, essentially, a cd player, I tried out Winamp, Windows Media Player and MusicMatch Jukebox. I got the best sound out of MusicMatch Jukebox with its equalizer settings. WMP nor Winamp could come close to the sound I liked. And, not being one for skins, Winamp's default interface is fugly! ;)

But, WMP 9 is MUCH improved and the Digital Rights Mgmt doesn't bother me.

No benefit of using ZA? Are you kidding? The number of probes it stops between me starting it, and turning of that particular alarm is astounding! (In 10 secs one time I have over 100 probes!)

Besides, once you get it setup, any "weird" internet access requests are a tell tale sign of a virus. Since running ZA, I have only had one virus (i forget which one), When I had a strange program asking for internet access, I told ZA no, and virus scanned. Cleaned it up right quick. (I do not even know how I got it.... I wasn't opening any attachments or anything....)

Anyway, I would recomend ZA even for dial-up. I know it is kind of a waste on a non-always on connection.... But like I said, I like the "sniffer" aspect of it.

And for music, I gotta go with MusicMatch Jukebox as well.

And any and all progams off of Gibson Research Corporation that secure WinXP. (DCOMbobulator, Shoot the Messenger, Unplug and Pray for starters.)

Great, thanks guys.
XP's built in unzip program works fine so I don't need winrar or winzip.
He doesn't need ZA (won't be online much and he doesn't know how to use it).
The startup program is nice, but he'll just use msconfig.

I got Acrobat Reader on there. I found a good popup stopper too.
Have winamp, downloaded AdAware 6. Good call on the CDex.

Does XP come with WMP 9? Where can I download all the codecs for that?
Anything else? Thanks so far!
