What should I get with a 300$ Budget.

My Specs:

XFX GeForce 6600GT 128 8x AGP
512MB PC2700
60gig MAXTOR 7200RPM
AsRock P4AL-800 478 Socket

What Upgrades should I make? I'm need of a new Motherboard real soon so that could be a thought. My B-day is coming up and I should have about 140$. Then I'm selling my XBOX and all of it's stuff for 200$. But 40$ of that is going to my parents. And I want to upgrade my computer because it has had some "speed" problems.

but only 512mb of pc2700 ram? not really good for setup if you really want to play games. some games wont run fast enough without 1024mb ram.(besides winxp runs just tahat little bit faster because of a smaller page file.)

amd3000+(152)retail

GIGABYTE GA-K8NS Nforce3-250(81)

512mb cas2.5 pc2700 ram(52)

amd64s arent really affected by ram speed(pc2100 vs 3200 may only gain you about 2-5 fps MAX). pc2700 will be fine you migh be missing out on 1 fps in hl2 or doomIII.

also, the nforce3 will is a great oc chip.

or, if you wanted to go with a socket 939 athlon64 setup(slightly more expensive, but more future proof)...

Motherboard - Epox 9NDA3J $91

CPU - Athlon64 socket 939 3000+ $153

RAM - 512 mushkin 3200 $51

Grand Total: $295

yeech...epox. go gigabyte. costs $10 less too. also, 3200 ran wont help since he's already got 1 stick pc2700. they both will default ot lowest speed, loosest latencies.

whats wrong with epox? there 939 boards are excellent. and 3200 RAM, will help. it costs the same as pc-2700, so it will allow him to have a more future proof rig. why buy 2700 if 3200 is the same price?

nm. thought it was cas3 on the ram. that would actually drag his performance down if it was.

epox just dosent have that good rep. in all the reviews, they always seem ot not oc as high or provide as good features or work quite as well.

if i remember correctly, this is the mb that, with 2slot cooling solutions would prevent you from hooking up a sata drive due to the layout. that's a pretty bad mistake to make for some people like me(using an artic silencer) planning to upgrade to raptors.

That is if he has a 2 slot cooling solution then it may not work quite well for him and that is if he even plans to use SATA at all. Also, given the poor location of the SATA ports,it does not in any way prevent the motherboard from working well or from getting an excellent overclock(high).
