In a cuple months I will have my license. I'm planning to buy a car but I dont have a lot of dough! Right now I have about $1,500 saved up. I can sell my computer, Home Theatre (in my room), dvd player. I can probally get $2000-3000 extra. Any ideas on a car I can get for that much + insurance. SHEESH! i'm 17. Parents told me to get a job but how the hell am i supposed to get there without a car/insurance. HELP!

You can get a job w/o a car. I worked for 6 months without a car, I always had a ride to work. Plan accordingally. (of course now I drive :))

can you get a small job where your mom/dad works? Get a job with your neighbor's company or someone who could give you a ride? Within walking distance? Work from home? Win the lottery?

Bike?

mass-transit/bus/train?

telecommuting?

Etherial displacement?

Don't sell your stuff. You won't get what it is worth, and you will just have to replace it later.

I rode my bike to my 1st job for more than a year before I got a car. Of course, it depends on where you live... I guess subway or bus is okay, too.

Good luck!

My suggestion is dont buy yourself a car, use your parents car if you have to. Get a good job first because a car is very expensive and running a car is more expensive.

you work around your classes... that's how.

do not sell your computer... i wouldn't. :)

i know a lot of people where i used to work at, and where i work now that either rode bikes, hitched rides with others, walked, or took the bus. saves money for what you wanna do in the future also.

insurance is NOT cheap... I've learned that also. :(

Besides, even if you sell all your stuff, you're just gonna want it back.
Be nice to your parents, maybe you can borrow their car every once in a while. There also Christmas coming up - ask for some cash. Maybe your parents or Grandparents would even loan you a little money.

Otherwise I agree with the other members - find a job close enough to get there by foot or bike. And save your money - obviously you were able to save enough to get all the other stuff.

My kid works full-time AND goes to high school...she goes to school online. Check your school, they might have a program like that too. It's a good deal for a motivated kid who'll do the work without being supervised. (By the way, if you've got a home theater system, a computer, and a dvd player in your room and don't have a job, looks to me like your parents've been generous enough.)

I don't think High school goes much past 3pm, at which point you can work until about 7 or 8pm. you should be able to pull in 20 hours a week or so (I pull 16 hours a week BETWEEN my classes in college). Get home by 8:30, do your homework till 9-11pm, go to bed. Pocket $100 every week.
I'm sure you can find something within walking/biking/commuting distance, unless you live way out in the country, in that case, you may be stuck.

There's also loans.

There are lots and lots of part time jobs that high school kids can do other than working at the local fast food chain.
Two I had was working as after school stock boy at a dept store.
Clean windows, put up signage, move out stock.
The other was working at an outdoor hockey rink. Open up the warmup shack, clear the ice, etc couple of hrs a night brought me a few hundred a month.
There are lots of jobs just get off the PC and go find em.
The local emploment office and prolly has an online listing or jobs for students was some of my better contacts.
