Okay right now I have no video card for the PC I'm building

should I..

(A) Get 2 x1900xt in crossfire and buy ATI's DX10 card in Q107

(B) Get a x1600 low level card to get me by, wait for the DX10 ATI cards to come out, and get the best for Q4 this year

(C) Get a x1600 or low level now, and upgrade to x1950 when its price comes down after the DX10 cards come out (Q406) - and get DX10 in 2007 when they are cheaper

First of all you should..

(A) Tell us what monitor you have and what resolution you plan to run

(B) Tell us what games you're building this for

(C) Tell us what game settings/features you would like to utilize (AA, AF, HDR, etc)

A: It'll be running on a 60" Sony SXRD LCoS TV

B: games? i guess whatevers out that graphic intensive. i want to be able to play oblivion maxed out, thats for sure, though i can be patient. definately want to be Crysis ready.

C: setting....everything?

all roads end me up with a good GPU, I just dont know whats the best road to take for the time being and if its worth spending a premium for the DX10 cards or if current technology would be better until the prices drop

thanks for the help

Well you seem pretty set on getting a ATI brand since Nvidia is in none of your options. I would honestly wait to see what Nvidia and ATI has to offer, I know some cards claim to be dx10 capable right now but that remains to be tested. Plus with the new cards coming out (as I recall cant remember where I read the exact specs) seems to be a huge jump in performance.

The reason no one can give you a decent answer is becasue you've pretty much said you want the world from your setup, but haven't placed any sort of limitations on it.

It's all about cash, and how much you have to spend. If you have it and don't mind spending it, option 'A' is certainly not going to let you down.

Whoa, that's some serious screen acreage.

Okay then. It looks like that thing has a native resolution of 1920x1080, so you don't need to go super-ballistic on the video hardware.

If you look here, you'll find some X1900XTX benches at 1920x1080. I'm sure there are others out there as well, but even with 4xAA/8XAF, an X1900XTX will keep average framerates around 40 fps, although it will dip into the 20s on some games.

You already have a new Crossfire board, so I would say either hold off and wait for the X1950XTX or pick up an X1900XT and o/c it. Then, if the minimum framerate bothers you, you could pick up a Master card and run them both. I'm fairly certain that would take care of any minimum framerate problems.

I can't really recommend waiting for DX10 hardware. There are bound to be months worth of frequent driver updates as ATI/NV work the bugs out of a new architecture. We also have NO idea when Vista will actually make it to market since it's been delayed multiple times now, and it's bound to have even MORE updates than both the R600 & G80 combined. Lastly, it will be quite some time before games are produced that really make use of DX10. Most likely enough time will have passed that you will need to upgrade your video system again anyhow.

Because I always thought a computer should have a computer monitor. Not a TV. :)
If you can afford to wait till Sept. 23 (???) then you can get a X1950XT CF setup.

Otherwise, get a X1900XT CF setup. 1920x1080 is a demanding resolution.

x1950 CF setups too expensive for me

its either x1900xt CF'd, or a single X1950 card (or dx10)

looks like i wont plan a R600 for now since as Creig said the architecture would be too new and there arent any immediate advantages. i guess ill get it once its out there for a bit and the prices go down, and a x19** setup would be semi-dated

okay, so its between x1900xt CF or x1950 solo

hmm....
