What should I do?

so today I had something interesting at work. While I was working, a coworker began talking about some things of a sexual nature, which I found highly offensive. It went on for a good 30 minutes. Meanwhile, all of my other coworkers lost focus on their task at hand to listen to him. It totally derailed productivity for the rest of the day.

I thought about saying something to him today, but failed to confront him about it. I was thinking about tomorrow first thing in the morning, having a meeting with him and the work leader, and let him know how offended I was, out of the hope that he won't do it again. Do you think this is a good idea or should I go about it a different way?

Confront him privately first, don't be too confrontational just say you'd like it to stop. If it continues, bring it to the work leader, file a formal complaint, etc, because then you would've done everything in your power to make it a non-issue and he messed it up.

I think it may end up causing an issue with your work group. You may want to try discussing it with your manager without bringing up any names so that they whole group can be told that this kind of talk is not appropriate.

Better than my idea because then everyone is anonymous.. not just your co-worker.

This thread is worthless without the topic being discussed in the OP.

I have a hunch you're overreacting though and should mind your business.

Seriously, don't get your boss involved.

Unless, of course you enjoy alienating yourself within the group and having your co-workers not trust/like you.

And this offends you how? My gut reaction is to tell you to stop being a bitch. If you go to a supervisor about it, he'll probably take some kind of action out of a sense of managerial duty, but walk away from it thinking you're a whiny bitch.

Maybe it's just me. I cant stand people who get easily offended.

Go ahead with your plan if you want to alienate yourself forever from your fellow coworkers and be treated with no respect whatsoever. Grow a thicker skin while you're at it.

Or, just ignore it.. these things typically work themselves out.

I also hate people who are easily offended, but the guy is a moron for talking about that kind of stuff at work. If I ever have, it has only been with people I'm familiar with and I make sure nobody else is around. If you go around talking about all the places you've fucked in open in the workplace you deserve to get written up just for being that stupid.

OP, I would drop the "offended" angle and go with the "inappropriate" or "you can get the company and yourself sued" angle. Also, I would not say anything about it unless it happens again. If it does, then you can take some action.

I bet the boss and the legal dept. love people talking about sex in their workplace - yea for more work for the lawyers!

You can be a bitch, or you can one up the guy by bringing a project to work tomorrow and broadcast JAV on the wall. That will show him.

Get over it. As long as he wasn't making sexually suggestive comments towards/about you (which can get him fired on the grounds of sexual abuse), it shouldn't bother you. If he wants to brag about who he laid, where, and how, more power to him. Get over it and stop whining.

That really depends on the company culture. I work in a privately held company with billions in revenues, and our workplace banter is akin to a frat house. That kind of speak goes on every day, and it makes it a much more enjoyable place to work IMO.

Stop being so easily offendable?

Or ask to be moved to a different area.

I'd not bring it up to management unless you actually ask him kindly to not do it again and he does anyway.

Once it's been mentioned to management prepare to be directly responsible for having that guy lose his job.
