Excellent time to setup a Linux system. Your laptop is perfect for the free stuff. If your can get a free Linux CD from a local college or from a Linux geek, you're on your way. You could get Installation disks by mail for under $5 which pays for shipping and handling.
I use Fedora Core 4, but you can get any of the Redhat, Slackware etc....
For the benefit of the new onlookers. What's nice about Linux, you say? All programs, like Open Office (similar to Microsoft Office) are free.
When I built my Linux desktop, FC4 found all the drivers for my non-descript hardware, couldn't do that with windows. Windows drivers search said that certain drivers were obsolete or one had to pay for them via cd. You will find that Linux has contributors from all over the world donating programs for free. You can use these programs without any cost to you.
Did I mention; no anti-virus or spyware programs needed.
