im kind of deciding what to do with my life. i am 18 years old. I have very bad grades in HS but got good SAT scores (1.8 gpa, 1240 SAT)

I got accepted To Dominican College Already and i have a few applications out there.

I am kind of considering what i want to do with my life. And i am actually considering becoming a firefighter. I am just wondering what the job is like and how much u get paid, etc?

And what kind of hours? is it true that u live at the firehouse for half the week then are off half the week?

I Live in North Jersey So it would most likely Become one in NYC. And how many years until u can retire with pension?

You are 18 years old, your gpa is crap and you are already looking at how many years you have to work before you retire. Maybe you should work on your motivation and attitude.

BTW, I hear McD's is hiring.

Spend some days with firefighters, go on day rides with policemen, etc.

Try out some of those things, see what interests you :D

Don't sweat it; you're young. I had bad grades in HS too but that has'nt stopped me. Stay off drugs and drinking and you should be OK.

The Boy Scouts have a program called the Explorers for people 18-21 (I think) that lets you pair up with local Fire stations and do work with them. You get to fight training fires, become officially certified as a first responder (the same medical skills that all firemen and policemen have, and a starting point for becoming a paramedic) and generally hang out at the fire station and meet people. Sometimes they even have cute girls in the program. You might want to see if they offer something like that where you are. I know a firefighter and a paramedic who got their start that way.

And oh, from my rather limited knowledge, most people who are higher up in the firefighting chain of command (Lieutenants, Captains and such) have a college degree in "fire science" or something like that. That may make a lot of difference in whether or not you can live off just a firefighter's salary, as most of the lower-ranking guys -- again, to my knowledge -- often have other jobs that they do on the side to make ends meet.

Thanks for refreshing my memory. I spent a couple of years there a long time ago and had forgotten the colloquialisms. As I recall there are 4 different dialects spoken, depending on which part of the country you are from.

I spent @ a year near Cotui, a few months in San Pedro de Macoris and the rest of the time in Las Matas de Farfan. Heh, heh, did considerable traveling thru the countryside as well.
