I've got a P-166, 64 meg ram, 6 gig hard drive, cd, lan card, yada yada laying around.. I was going to learn linux on it and I put red hat on but Its driving me completely nuts so I just said screw that... No one will help me with it either, they all say there is plenty of resources and to go screw myself... LOL, who cares... Anyways, I just want an Idea of what to do with this... I already have a dedicated server for my network/internet for web/ftp/internet connection sharing....

Any ideas of what I could use my extra for??

Thanks
john

If you don't already have a router, you could turn your old computer into a router here. Last I knew they were giving away free licenses for the OS. All you need is a couple of cheapo NIC's and some cable. Make sure you look at the compatible NIC list.

I sold my IBM Aptiva 166 MHz with 48 megs of ram for 300 with a monitor to a guy that was only interested in Office stuff and the internet. I did put a 56k modem in it before I sold it though. I can't belive I payed almost $2000 for it about 4 years ago.

You could make it into a honeypot to watch hackers break in. People use these purposely vulnerable pc's to see what tactics hackers use and then plug the holes in the rest of the network. Although, some people say that a honeypot is dangerous, because it can in turn be used to attach the rest of the network.

My thought is to put this in the dmz and case closed. It would be interesting to research anyway.

One site where you could probably learn more about doing this is security focus .com

I've got a P-133 lying around. Thought about putting Linux on it to mess around with....also thought about just hooking it up to home network for basically just file storage, etc....but decided to flea-bay it instead....hehe...somebody will put it to better use than me....

Linux is not an OS to mess around with. Unless you have some specific intent in running it, you will hate it because you'll not be willing to learn, experiment, and use it for everyday tasks. Which is probably why jondoe disliked it.

SloppyB - I don't think that old of a puter will support larger hard drives. My old IBM Aptiva would only support up to a 4 gig. I could be wrong though.

DARRIN - Most new hard drives (retial) come with a software fix that will allow you to use larger hard drives. I've done it...several times.
