What should I do with a bunch of old SCSI drives....

Here's the deal... about 3 years ago I was able to tear out a bunch of good drives from some retired servers.

I got about 20 36GB 10k and 15k high speed scsi drives. People are selling them on eBay from $20-$40 a pop (new or refurbished).

They've been sitting around, and frankly, I've never even taken the time to sell them because I never tested them AFTER I moved them around, and I don't want to be responsible for the drives.

So I'm tempted to just trash them, even though I could potentially sell them.

But even if I make $100, I really don't want to waste the time on it. Dealing with craigslist/ebay buyers, shipping, waiting, etc.

Thoughts? I'm sure someone, somewhere could put them to use, but I don't have the patience to seek them out. Of course I'll take them somewhere for recyling. Should I just throw them in a box and put a craigslist ad in the paper with "FREE - just pickup" ??

I also have a bunch of old 10/100 nics. Nothing special.. trash? I used to be into hardware, but honestly I do all of my admin on virtual now and I've lost interest in hardware to the point I don't want to mess with it unless it's my own pc. I don't even like touching other people's computers anymore.

Yeah, since they were out of production servers, you don't want to sell them to somebody who might salvage the data. Better to shred 'em. Or, like exdeath said, take 'em out back.

I generally take my old HDDs and tear them open. I steal the magnets which are really, really strong and mess around with the motors and such. The plates make great wind chimes too. That's about all.

If you want an easy way to kill them, a .45 Cal or a drill press work well.

I find that with some older hardware not worth selling but still good, I give it to a local computer shop that deals with second hand parts. I just call and see if they want them (free) otherwise bin then. finding a place to donate them (next option) around where I am is a waste of time.

Think of it this way, if they still have data on them, could you find yourself liable for the release of that data "into the wild", if you get rid of them?

Time to find a SCSI card, hook them up, and DBAN them to death first.

I have a couple Seagate 15k drives kicking around. I haven't used them in years. I wonder how they would compare to 7200 RPM SATA drives of today? I think the SCSI card is PCI (mid-late 90's).

Personally, I'd rip them open, take the magnets out, and manufacture a wooden magnetic knife block.
