I've debated on getting a new HD or spending 100 or so to make my pc significantly quieter. I've decided on the quieter pc is the most needed feature right now. So, what do i need to do? I've got an xp1800 O/Ced to 1616 with 140FSB. I don't want to clock it back to normal. Suggestons?

oh, also I'm looking for a new keyboard. Not wireless or some 100 keyboard. But a good quality one. It can be ergo or not, what ever the recommendations lead too.

Get a P4 setup.

Seriously, that's what I did and the noise difference is tremendous. I was using the retail HSF that came with my XP1700+ and I thought it was quiet, but I could still hear it.
Now I've got a P4 1.8a with the Retail HSF and the thing is darned near silent! :Q Couldn't believe the difference. I still walk into my room sometimes and think "who the hell shut off the computer?!" since it's so quiet. ;)

i have an ibm keyboard. its nice and soft and quiet. those ones from dell are also very soft and quiet. i am guessing they are made by logitech... just a guess. in my system, the loudest part is the cpu fan. if u have the same problem... look into spending some money on a noisecontrol silverado or something.

DUDE, you should be gettin' a Dell Quiet key (sorry couldn't resist). I bought 4 of 'em at a show for like $5/ea a few years back. I've tossed my MS Natural (ergo split) into the 'spare parts' bin ever since. It's a well built, and tough keyboard. I've spilt drinks in the thing, and it keeps on working. and the keys really are 'quiet', ask my girlfriend I never wake her up with my 'annoying fast typing' anymore.

as for quieting the PC down? You could put all your case fans on switches, and only turn them on when you need them. Also you can try to quiet the case down with some kind of acoustic foam, or something like Dynamat (like they use in Car Audio). I also agree that the retail P4 HS/F's are much quieter than probally anything else you can buy. One more thing I can suggest - I'm working on building a duct so that I can lose the noisy fan on my Volcano 7cu. I've got some 2 1/2 PVC where one side will be attached to the intake, and the other side will be attached to the exhaust, and I'm gonna spray the inside of the PVC with some acoustic foam to cut down on the air turbulance.
just my .000000000000002 cents. ;)

you can get a nice celeron or P4 and underclock it, and then run it without a fan at all.

go to www.heatsinkstore.com (svc compucycle)

but all the arctic cooling brand 80mm fans and cpu fans that are thermal controlled.

then you are done (works really well with my p4 2.53 , and temp controlled 250 watt PSU)

M$ Natural keyboard $14.50 -- Shipping's a bit much for just one keyboard ... but if you can find something else off of their site (or order 2 of the keyboards) then it's a damn fine deal. I ordered 2 of the keyboards and shipping was $12 ground (since they were so close it arrived next day (Y)!

Oh and try water cooling to quiet the case :p

I play games with the arrow keys. I can't take it how the MS elite board is set up with those arrow keys.

ok, this is what i'm thinking about doing. I got a 480 antect truepower psu. i'm going to take out the fan and put in a panaflow L1A. I've heard people cuts of there grill on the back of the psu. I don't know if i really want to do that since i paid 90 bucks for this psu. I really don't want to something that's irreplacable. Will it significantly reduce the noise? I don't care to much about the air flow in the psu(as long as it gets enough air flow). I got a volcano 2 HSF or something like that. i'm thinking about getting a Thermalright AX-7 and putting a L1A on that. I think these 2 upgrade/mod 's will reduce the noise a lot. I also have a radeon 8500 o/ced to 290/290. It has a stock fan on it. Is there any recommendations about modding this?

my system has 6 panaflos (counting the hsf and the psu i replaced the fan on, very simple mod), a seagate 'cuda iv (silent), the fan on the 8500 and the fan on the south bridge. all in all, it's pretty quiet, but if you're looking for even quiter i believe tt makes a big heatsink without a fan. the smaller fans are obviously going to be harder to make quiet, if you can get big passive heatsinks and big fans to go slower on top that'll probably help a lot. panaflo and pabst are the two types of quiet fans you want to look into.

the natural is not quiet at all. i've had the natural elite and the pro (the pro has normal arrow keys). i switched to a logitech internet keyboard that is a lot quieter.

you should go to one of the other forums for starters ;)
there are hundreds of posts about ways of getting your system quiet in the cases and cooling and cpu and overclocking forums...those are very helpful :)
