What should I do for my friend?

One of my best friends is what I'd call a very, very *good* person. She genuinely cares for people, very involved with her church, devoting her life to being a doctor w/ plans for working in impoverished areas, things like that. For the last 5 years or so she's been going on missionary work to Haiti, not a very nice place by any stretch of the imagination, but that surely doesn't deter her. She loves it there. She is just genuinely, truly, honestly a good hearted individual. Ya know, alot of us are good people, but she's good people. Hard to convey.

So as I'm talking to her tonight, she asks me to keep a good Haitian friend of hers in my thoughts, a pastor. I met him at her wedding, he was a good enough friend to fly to the States for the event, which I'm sure was not an insignificant portion of his funds. Things aren't too pleasant down there right now, what with the hurricanes passing close buy and just general upheaval. While I'm talking to her online, she gets the phone call that her friend was apparently shot and killed today. I don't know the details. Man, that just really hit me. Who wants to get news like that? Who wants to see a good friend lose someone like that?

So now I want to do something. I'm thinking of getting some sort of collection together to donate to her church. Emailing friends or something like that and getting their buy-in. I don't really know how to do that, what's a good way to get money together? Have them send it to me? I'm sure the church doesn't have any way of accepting donations online. What's a good way to do this? Any independent charity channels that I could somehow utilize? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
