what should i do...bad experience on way to hospital

Senior member
im a college student and got sick at the end of june and was in the hospital for 12 days.

at the onset i presented with a high fever and was pretty much out of it - i went to my school's infirmary for some antibiotics where i pretty much became too weak to speak...so they called the paramedics

the paramedics came and carried me out without the stretcher (this is normal in confined spaces which the infirmary was) but for some reason the nurse didn?t like this and said she was going to complain to their supervisor about how they carried me out.

anybody that works in EMS knows that it?s ok how they carried me out...but the paramedic for some reason calls his supervisor and starts bitching about how the school i go to thinks that it is its own city and how important it is. he does this for about 5 min and then comes into the ambulance. He takes my vitals (ie bp, pulse, etc) and they are elevated.

at the time my eyes were really sensitive to light so i had them shut. he asked me to open them up but i couldnt b/c it seriously hurt too much. also i was pretty much too weak to talk at the time so he couldnt here that i was saying that they were sensitive to the light. so at this point he gets pissed off and says "if you dont open your eyes im going to shove this 16 gauge needle (one of the largest needles you can use) into your arm." i cant do it - so he does and starts running normal saline and d50w.

at this point i figure hes thinking its a drug overdose and that i dont want him to see my pupils. also b/c he was mad at the nurses he didnt bother to get a pt history - in which i told the nurses that i was sick with a fever for the last 3 days.

im mostly pissed off b/c i have a scar where the 16 gauge needle was and the vein feels like a rock where he put it. usually u only use a 16 gauge needle in extreme cases like hypovolemia where u need to reestablish body fluids extremely fast and into the antecubital space (area above ur elbow). also usually u run lights and sirens if you use a 16 gauge needle - they took their time to the hospital. also im pissed off b/c i feel he took advantage of me when i was too weak to do anything about it. secondly, since he didnt bother to get the history from the infirmary about how i was sick for the last 3 days and im too weak to tell the docs at the ER whats going on, they think i overdosed on drugs which delays treatment and causes me to be placed in a section of the hospital only for drug addicts until my parents can convince them that i dont take drugs and they call the infirmary to find out what really happend.

later on he finds out that im a medic too who works for a rival company and starts acting nicer - i can tolerate mistakes since they are human...but i feel this guy intentionally hurt me...which is totally unacceptable for a paramedic.

So here is the question...i feel like i should file a complaint to his supervisor about him...however im pretty sure this would get him fired and at the very least suspended.

he took advantage of me when i was too weak to do anything about it

That really sucks man.
Hopefully you'll be there for him when he's gettin hauled to the ER

Those hard vein things really suck. My dad got some of those when he had surgery over the summer and he says they hurt quite a bit 🙁

Get the bastard in trouble, he deserves it! Think about it this way, you're preventing that fvckhead from doing that to another patient in the future. If he get suspended you can believe his bedside manner will improve. He needs to learn to prevent his personal feelings from affecting his job. Especially when it involves other peoples lives.

If it's bothering you that much, get off the internet and file a complaint.

Yeah, file a complaint. If he didnt' worry about consequences of his behavior, why should you?

that's pretty fvcked man...someone in your position with the knowledge has to do something. What's to say that he's not moody and does this at least once a week...he should act more professionally or find a new job.

I would have no problem getting him in trouble, with what he did to you.

Of course report him man. Luckily you are a paramedic too so you knew that it was wrong. I think if I were treated that way, I'd be upset but would chalk it up to routine procedure.

If that's how you feel, you should do it.

This is irrelevant.

The guy's either an ass or has become jaded. Whatever the case it's clear he isn't fit to do his job in his current condition. File a complaint; you owe it to the next person who might be subjected to his crap.

I say to hell with what ATOT and the general informed public thinks, join his side and help him fight the good fight. You guys could be the Mighty Malpractice Duo!
