So my comp is about 2.5 years old and I can't decide whether or not to upgrade to a C2D now (after price drops) or try and do a cheap video card upgrade and stick it out for a little bit longer.

Currently my system is a:

S754 3200+ @2.4ghz
ECS 755 A-2
Mushkin 1gb PC 3200
XFX 128mb 6600 GT AGP

I was thinking if I were to get upgrade just the vid card, I'd try and find a cheap X800 series card.

Building a brand new system would suck right now because I have to get a brand new case and PSU which would probably run me an extra $180-200 and right now might not be the best time.

Any new lower-midrange video cards coming out soon? I haven't been following video cards very much since the 6800 GS came out so I'm kind of a bit confused here - especially with the ATI lineup.

So far I think my C2D box would look something like:

-C2D E6320
-Asus P5N-E SLI
-2gb DDR2 800 RAM (I think I'll go with whatever is fairly cheap at the time of purchase)
-Video Card suggestions please?
-Thermaltake Tsunami
-X2 Connect 550W (Yes shoot me =P but I like UV and my load doesn't seem to be too bad. Correct me if I'm wrong though)

Long and confusing post. :(

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you <3!!

If your into games, look into some good ol video cards, maybe a 7900GS or a X1950Pro?

edit: The new 86xx series cards from nvidia should be due sometime this month or the next? you could wait till then. What PSU do you have?

8600GTS/8600GT/8500GT come out in 10 days, so you should probably stick around for those.

I'd get a new videocard and a cheap 512mb stick of ram. Consider that in about 1 year quad core will cost $270 from today's $850. That's huge savings. Today's videocard upgrade will cost you $200. Try to sell the 6600GT for $40-50 to recoup some of the upgrade cost.

Yes I am a gamer. Currently playing WoW, Oblivion, WC3, along with Doom 3, and Source games on occasion. Looking to pick up F.E.A.R. and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. soon though.

I also don't know why but my comp dies loading stuff up in WoW and Oblivion sometimes.

My PSU is a 400W, forgot the brand. If I do a "small" upgrade now, it'll probably last me 6 months at the most so I'm reluctant to spend a lot of money on it. So a 7900 or x1950 is probably too expensive for such a short term upgrade, plus my PSU would probably kill itself. >_<

I do plan on selling my 6600GT if I get a replacement card though.

Thanks for the input so far. :)

Well a 7600gt will cost you 170.00$ in AGP form and should add 50% to your frame rates. Your psu can handle it too. But for 40 dollars more you can get a 7900gs that when overclocked should allmost double your frame rates. And your psu can handle it as well.

If you want to play Fear and Stalker I'd go for the 7900gs.

A x1950 card will have you upgrading your psu , so don't go that way.
