What should I do about this?

So I have the lease for the house. There are three other people that live here, they pay me rent, I pay the landlord. This one girl, older then me, has a "more"stable job (I work for tips) can be a few days late sometimes. It's cool, I can cover her for about a week or something until she can write me a check.

So last month she writes me a check and I never cash it. I just never made it to the bank and I had enough in mine to pay the landlord. I know I know.... dick move. Especially when we are all hurting for money. I really have no excuse except I was lazy. So when she writes me a check this month I cash both of them, last months and the current one. One of them bounces and the funds are withdrawn from my account along with a $7 fee.

I know it was a major douchebag move to sit on the check like that, but now I am out $275. I called her and she said she was going to call her bank to see what is going on. I didn't tell her that I cached both checks, I will tell her when I call her again.

I guess I just have to tell her that I didnt cash the check for May until June....
Should I offer less money, eat the cost entirely?

We are all quit broke. I doubt between the four of us we have more than $3000 in our checking accounts combined. Money can be a sensitive subject around these parts.

No way. At best, he should let the fees go since it's not too much and between friends but it's entirely her fault.

I say they both share the blame. She should be monitoring her finances more closely, and the OP should have not sit on the check for a month.

her bank will most likely also charge her a 35 dollar fee, you should be eating that too

Maybe... but she really should be aware of the checks she gave out. You always keep a balanced total in your checkbook so you know how much you really have, not just what the bank thinks you have. Checking online doesn't tell you about the checks you've written that haven't been cashed yet.

OP just to not cause bad blood, I'd maybe offer to pay for her overdraft fee but she still owes for all months rent.

WHAT? No fucking way is he responsible for ANY of the bank charges. It's not his fault she can't manage her money better than that. Hasn't anyone ever heard of reconciling their checking account? If the check hasn't cleared...do NOT spend the money...

She needs to make the OP whole for the bounced check and any charges levied against him by his bank...PLUS be responsible for charges by her own bank.

Exactly. Once she wrote the check she should have deducted that amount from her account and considered it gone. She doesn't get to spend it again on something else.

This is correct. If you're going to write checks, you need to keep track of your account. That's why I pay online, or use cash. I can't be arsed to keep track of pieces of paper, so I avoid it all together.

While she should have managed her finances better, it is often tough to keep up with who cashed what check when esp. when everyday life is hectic. As for the same excuse, you didn't have time to cash the check until a month later. However, it is a pet peeve of mine that people wait a long time to cash checks. So, unfortunately, I am biased slightly towards it was a bit more your fault than hers, although you both were at fault.

Hell no, she should have deducted it from her account the second she wrote the check. Just assume its already gone and there isnt an issue

You are totally nuts, when you write someone a check you IMMEDIATELY deduct it from your checkbook and dont try to use the money

The amount she owes should calculated as follows.

(Rent + fees ) - (her level of hotness on a scale from 1-10 *10)
