What should I do about this job...?

Basically, here's the situation...I got a summer job up at Yale working in Cluster Support Services. Basically, my boss is the glorified gofer(gofer this, gofer that) and pretty much everything gets laid down on me. When I was interviewed, I agreed to work until 8/31/02, and that I could have some time off(no time was specified).

Now I started working here the day after the Spring semester ended, and will continue to work until like ~3 days before the Fall semester begins, but I really don't want to work straight through and right into school, because I'll have blown my whole summer and gotten no time off. Middle of last week my boss comes to me and tells me that if I want some time off to take it in the next couple of weeks because we'll be really busy in Mid->Late August, so I thought about it and decided to take the 29th -> 2nd off, and that was cool, but over the weekend I thought about it and changed my mind to just work straight until August 21st and leave myself ~10 days before the semester started up, knowing that my boss wouldn't be to happy, but not really caring...

So I come into work this morning, and he's kinda quiet, doesn't mention anything about the email til like 2 hours into the morning, and says "yeah my superiors weren't to happy with that, they might wanna talk to you." So now I'm like ah WTF.

His boss takes me and him outside to talk, telling me that they're pleased w/ the work that I've done so far, but that this disappoints them. Then he goes to give his views on my situation, one being the "Fatherly"(huh?) viewpoint, and that is that he's happy with my work, but if I'd like to come back next summer, and I quote: "Hey I really like that kid Ben, he worked out well, but he fvcked us over at the end of the summer". And I'm standin there like :confused:WTF:confused: Then his other viewpoint is that I'm just a temp employee and there's really nothing that he can do about it, etc etc...

He gave me until tommorow morning to reconsider staying through the end of the summer(and get the 29th -> 2nd off again). He told me that if I chose to stay that all this would be forgotten. Personally, I'm not really happy with the job and don't wanna come back, but it is Yale, and it'll probably look nice on my resume ;), and I don't wanna leave a bad impression(It's not my intention to screw them) incase I use them for a reference.

So what do you guys think? Stick it out for the summer, or leave myself some time before school...

edit - spelling

Stay.

Yeah, time off is nice, but since it sounds like you don't really have any plans or other committments - take the 29th-2nd off, make some plans with friends to go do something, then work through August like you originally agreed.

The reason I say that is, not only does it look good on a resume, etc etc, but, you don't want to start burning bridges so soon; a reference is good, but, even more important than that - these are people who know people, and you might be able to find a job through them someday. But if you p*ss them off, you can kiss that opportunity good bye!

So, that's my $0.02. Good luck with whatever you choose!

IMO not that is matters much, but you did a crappy thing asking for one time off and then changing it to a time they had already told you would be very busy.

I would just keep the first time you asked for off. Who knows what this could do for you in the future or not do for you. People have a funny way of remembering bad things and spreading the word.

It is not like you would be working till the day before classes so you will still have a few days. Most people don't get the summers off. You are just getting the taste of life after school early.

I wouldn't take the week off jsut for the hell of it. If you were planning to go to Europe or something, go ahead and leave, but if you're jsut going to sit on your ass and watch TV, you're better off working.

Yeah, I should've taken this into account before I agreed to work straight through the summer, so it is my fault that I'm in this situation...I do agree with most of you though, as I didn't have anything specific planned, just wanted some time to relax, so I guess I'll just have to tough it out unless someone can give me a good reason to leave...

Thanks so far guys :)

Stay, take no time off, and see if they will pay you for what time you took off as a "Bonus".

I'd like to think that they would but I'm only a Temp summer employee, so I don't think that'll fly :(

Stay. If you really impress them, they will write/say great recommendations about you when you needed it.
