What should I clock my Athlon XP 2500+ at?

So, I've got my new Epox 8RDA+ and Athlon XP 2500+ Barton set up.. a lot happier since I upgraded from an A7V133 w/ Athlon 900MHz 🙂 Question, though. What should I be clocking my system at? I noticed right out of the box, the BIOS reported me running at around 1.1GHz. Now I set clock rate in the BIOS to 166x11.0 so it's at 1.83GHz now, what it's supposed to be. I've heard you can overclock Bartons a bit without any 3rd party equipment. Could I say, set the clock to 166x12.5 safely?

Anyway, is 166x11.0 the proper setting? I thought this CPU supported 233MHz FSB or something like that. Any ideas?

Thanks!!

The XP2500 uses a 333 Mhz bus which is double data rate, so it's actually 166 Mhz. 166x11 is it's stock speed... I have mine running at 200x11 for 2.2 Ghz. That's a typical overclock... but if your RAM isn't PC3200 or higher, you probably can't run it that high... so leave it at 166 and increase the multiplier gradually until it becomes unstable, then back it down. 166x12.5 shouldn't be hard to reach.

I run mine at 12.5x170MHz now but for the first few weeks I ran it at 12.5x166MHz. I have never had to raise Vcore above default and my cooling is far from extreme.

12.5x166MHz is basically a given for that chip and board. Go for it.

Thanks! I'll try it at 166x12.5 and see how that works out. At least I'll know if it's too fast/hot, right? The Epox m/b will shut off the computer if I recall.

Thanks again.. you guys rock. Anandtech is the only place where you can post a tech question and get a good answer in less than ten minutes. 🙂

PS: I've got Kingston Hyper-X PC2700 RAM, by the way

I have mine at 13x166... so it comes out to a 3000+ but thats because my board doesn't have a PCI/AGP lock... if i did it would be at 200 like everyone else... 🙁

Hm, what's the highest safest temp for the Athlon XP 2500+ Barton to run at? I'm overclocking at 166x12.5 now.. the CPU is at 53C, which I'm sure is no big deal. Just wondering what the safe range is.

Where do I adjust the multiplier at?

I too have an 8RDA+. Can't find it in the BIOS. Found something like a CPU Voltage regulator? Can't adjust that to anything like 12.5 though.

A little help here, please?

It's usually called the CPU ratio. It's referred to as the multiplier because you multiply the FSB x the ratio to get the clock speed.
