What should I buy?

I plan to use this computer for video games and I decided to get a new computer after seeing the systems requirements for the new game I am going to want to play, http://www.elderscrolls.com/games/oblivion_faq.htm. I am just wondering if I should wait a little while to buy a new computer to save money, and if not what should I purchase? I am willing to spend around $1000 for this computer, but I do not want to get the most out of my money because I will not be buying another computer for a long time. What should I buy or when should I buy?

No need to wait since you're not buying a high end rig,if that were the case I would have
advised you to wait for the geforce 7900 next month.as for buying I suggest the following:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Mainboard:there are many good ones,I like the Chaintech VNF4
Memory:2x1024 Corsair TWINX2048-4000PT
GPU:eVGA GeForce 6800GS 256MB

BTW,welcome to the forums

There are a lot of questions that would help.

Do you need a new monitor? If not, what monitor do you currently have? What resolution do you play games in?

Do you want a new keyboard/mouse? If you're going to reuse stuff from your old computer, does it have an optical drives you want to reuse?

How much non-gaming stuff do you do? Do you do much multitasking? Do you have big plans to rip/encode/burn DVDs?

How much do you care about your PC being quiet?

If this is a hardcore game-only system and you already have a monitor, you could afford something better than a 6800GS, but it's a bit of a catch-22, because if you are going to reuse your old monitor, it would probably be a waste to have anything better than a 6800GS on some old monitor.

I would have to disagree with gamerx because he is on a limited budget and the CPU wouldn't add that much to video game performance I would stick with a single core for now and upgrade later whe you have more money. Go with a 3200+

I do not need a new monitor, and I am used to playing games at the lowest resolution possible because the computer I have now is over 4 years old. I plan the get a logitech mouse. I do plan to rip/encode/burn DVDs. I already have a dvd burner so im good there. I could care less about my pc being quiet. I do not use a flat screen, I have this big ass old thing. Are flat screens better or are they just smaller? So all I plan to do with this computer is play videogames, and burn dvds.

Elder Scrolls looks like a really good looking game. I would get a new monitor as well so it looks good while ur playing it. If ur only gonna be playing this game at the lowest resolutions, i thinkd u'd be missing out and and not doing the game justice.

(already preorded my copy from Fry's...)

i would first start off my build with an Opteron 165 which can be clocked to FX60 speeds and essentially have the same core, meaning... its the same processor, then account the price difference... hope that helps

p.s. but if you are taking your time and pieceing together a pc over the next 4-5 months, start with the components that don't get outdated as soon as there out, like the case, psu, hard-drive, sound card then at that time if you're ready pick up the platform (MB) and build from there 🙂

Cheers

I do not plan to play it at low resolution, I plan to play it as high as I can. I was just saying that I was used to playing games on shity resolution. Also, would a new monitor really improve the game that much? And if so, what kind should I get?

I'd suggest you really consider bamacre's post -- that would be a sweet system that would last you for some time. I've built two PC's with the Sonata case and it's a cool, quiet, and attractive solution. I'm using the same 7800GT video card and I can currently play all of my games at the highest resolutions. I've used two or three gigabyte boards also and no complaints there.

As far as a monitor goes, I don't know a ton about resolutions on CRT screens, but my 1280x1024 LCD looks fantastic and is the envy of my CRT owning friends. I'm using the Viewsonic va712b (17", 8ms) and that's around $200 nowadays on newegg.com. There is also the Viewsonic 19" 2ms that makes me drool, but that's closer to $400 at the moment I think. The nice thing is that you can build your PC now and upgrade your monitor at a later date. They say that the monitor is the component that should be your single highest expenditure, and I agree given it's longevity and so forth, but you don't have to buy it first.

One thing about the 7800GT -- it only has two DVI outputs, so you'll need a VGA adaptor or something to even hook up an older CRT to it.

The 7800GT is wonderful, farcry for example i have mine turned up to the highest settings for everything and it's a joy to play (although i don't think i've got the most recent eyecandy downloads).

Monitors are the things you spend most of your time staring into. But with your budget i'd just stick with what you have at the moment assuming you're happy with it, and then upgrade the monitor next.

letstalkcisco is right. You should probably wait until you get the game or maybe even a bit after to see how its looking on your crt. But once you get an lcd, you won't want to go back. Also, most 7800gt's come with vga adapters so that shouldn't be an issue. My xfx 7800gt has dual dvi and i received 2 vga adapters (i've never used them and have 5 total now😛)

Would I be able to overclock that processor easily? And also, what differences are there between the dual core processors and the single. The AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ . Is it worth twice as much money?

bump

Actually, now I can probably spend over 1000 so like 1000-1200 price range.
I have decided to get the geforce 7800 GT and the X2 3800 +. Everything else I am not sure. What would be the best setup to overclock using the X2 3800 +. Is bamacres setup overclock friendly or are there better options. I live in California so there will be a hefty tax on this so keep money in mind.

it'll overclock fine. the things i'd change:

gpu: get the eVGA instead of XFX cause i'm pretty sure it comes with an overclocking warranty (lifetime)
motherboard: get a dfi board for around $130
case: u don't need a $100 one but no problem getting it either
hard drive: get the 16mb cache version of that. it's like $5 more

hope i helped 😀

wecome to the forums btw

Yeah that does help alimoalem, thanks. I haven't really looked around for cases so i don't necassarilly want that one, and I would enjoy saving money on it. What cases would you recommend for a good price?

Where does the eVGA come with a lifetime warranty? The one I saw on newegg didnt say that? Could you give me a link maybe?
