What should I buy for my new system?

Building a new system with i7 860 and 4 gb ram. Looking for overall performance, but especially games, mainly play Lord of the Rings Online, but will also be playing World in Conflict and who knows what else in the future. Playing at 1920 x 1200 resolution on a Dell 2408WFP. Fry's has a GTX 260 216 for $149 with $20 rebate. Newegg has Sapphire 4890 for $189 with $20 rebate. I'd be lucky to get 5850 for $259. I don't know why, but I like the idea of using the Displayport on the 4890 and 5850, but not a huge deal. I also like the overclocking potential of the 5850 with voltage mod of core 1 GHz and you know the RAM can go much higher. But is it worth the extra cash? What do you guys think for my situation?

Great, now I am seeing a 4870 1GB for $156 with $20 rebate. I don't know what to do.

Since it is a new system I would say the 5850, but really depends on your budget and if you are willing to pay for stuff that might have reduced value at the present.

If you don't want to shell the money for the 5850, well than the 4890 is the best value, unless you care about cuda/physX.

My suggestion: buy the cheapest one (the gtx 260 for $129 AR or the 4870 for $136 AR), keep the rest of the money for when you *need* to upgrade. When you factor in the value in recycling or selling existing hardware you should come out ahead.

Make sure to google the make of that 260 for squealing issues however. If it's an extreme value brand your odds of having an obnoxious card are extremely high.

XFX or Sapphire 4890 would be the card I would personally buy if I had to buy today. But for now, my factory OC 8800GT still runs everything I need at 1920x1200 -- though I do have to crank down eyecandy once in a while.

The 4870 comes with an aftermarket cooler and is $35 less than the 4890. Do you think I would be able to overclock the 4870 as high or close to as high as I could overclock the 4890? Anyone have experience with this? I mean the 4890 is basically an overclocked 4870 anyway so wouldn't the 4870 make more sense?

Some articles say overclocking the ram on HD58xx is not such a good idea. It will clock proportionally higher than hd4xx but yield little increase in performance (due to increased error processing).

I kind of wonder about these cards with non reference coolers and if they are just going to spread heat around my case as opposed to pushing it out. Also, any idea of the noise level on these things?

OP I am in the same boat as you are. I might just wait till Black Friday to see if anyone has a sale on a 5850.

RussianSensation, those are basically the cards I was looking at. That 4890 is a Vapor-X? I thought they were a little different. There are a lot of 1 egg ratings for the Vapor-X that costs $10 more on Newegg.
