Hello,

I'm a student, (going to university not next school year but one after, in the UK). There are quite a few things I am interested, but I really don't know what ones I would really enjoy. So I'm thinking there might be a few people on here who could let me know what their job is like if it relates to my interests.

The subjects I'm studying at the minute are, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths. I'm aiming and should get without too much difficulty 4 A grade AS Levels, and 3 A grade A Levels (4 if i dont drop one).

I am at the minute interested in:
Engineering (aint got a clue on specifics)
Maths/Physics (Research capacity)
Anything to do with computers
Teaching

I spend the majority of the time that I am in the house on a computer, and well I love computers (I guess I'm a bit of a geek that way). I am trying my hands out on everything to do with computers, so far I have successfully managed web design and management (using php), basic use of Linux, can do just about anything with Windows. I am also currently getting into software programming, at the minute I'm learning C++. I find that no matter what the piece of software is, give me about an hour or so and I can do most - everything with it.

Is there anything that anyone would like to advise me on because I want to have a career that I get great enjoyment and fulfilment out of, and I also want to make a bit of money (enough to love comfortably and afford all the technology i want :D).

If you would like any more information about my interests before suggesting anything let me know.

Hi,

I currently work in IT for a popular brick based toy company :) I came in with no qualifications but a keen interest in IT and have moved on from a Service Desk role to dedicated Mac support, Linux VMWare server setups, ADSL/VPN rollouts etc. Our Web developers are always on the lookout for people who know php! I have to say that I love my job and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in IT (and who wants to continually learn as well).

My advice would be to look for a similar role, and if the company is reasonably sized then any IT opportunities you want or show an interest in should come up - the initial pay is not too bad and once you get into Server Management you'll be laughing :)

Become a doctor, pharmacist, lawyer, or something similar but if I was just going into college the last thing I would do would be get into the IT field. (unless you are planning on living in India).

FoBot: I don't mind how much it is, I just want to be able to live with a nice house, and to be able to buy my kids the things they need. I'm not really interested in being rich, just able to live in a nice area.

That is something I had been thinking about. It is an area that really interests me. The question I wonder is though, will it be a field there will be plenty of jobs in?
