What should i be able to expect from a locked Barton 2500+

I honestly do not know anything about OCing, but i was hoping to be able to bump mine up to 2.2 perhaps.

I'm not running any extra cooling aside from case fans, so i'd rather have it slower & stable than anything, but i'm wondering if it's not unusual to be only able to get to about 184 FSB before it won't post.

My specs: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, Barton 2500+ (locked one), 1024 MB generic DDR400 RAM.

I set my voltage up to 1.75, but i still can't get it higher.
Is it my memory timings? That's one thing i really don't know enough about to fiddle with.

What would be optimal in that that regard?

Under stock, my temps are about 39C idle, 45ish under load, but at 180 FSB, they get up to 50C under load, which seems hot.

Any advice for this OC n00b would be appreciated.

50 degrees is ok......i think athlons are ok all the way past 70

the cpu may well be able to do FSB higher than 180......but the FSB is the system speed....if ure cpu has a fsb of 180 then ur ram is running at 180 (360DDR) and the northbridge will be running faster and therfore hotter.....northbridge's dont generally like huge changes in speed..the rubbish cooling most are given means they get unstable really easy......also if u increrase FSB u increase the PCI and AGP speeds since theyr are calculated as fractions of the FSB............basically it will probably be ur memory or chipset holding u back

Nope. Both your pci & agp bus are locked on your motherboard, so they have nothing to do with it. If you're using PC3200 memory, then it's your processor. Some of the newest XP2500's (the cheaper desktop versions, not the mobile versions) are having major problems getting past 180 fsb, which is why all of us overclockers stopped buying them.;)

i have the same cpu,i can't get past 190 even at 1.8vcore,just the luck of the draw it seems with these chips for overclocking.

I had the same problem with my original 2500+. Couldn't get past 185FSB stable with even 1.75v, and it was driving me crazy. Then, the world of mobiles fell upon me, and there was much bliss to be had ;)

The generic DDR400 ram may be a factor, as one buddy bought some cheap ram only to find it was extremely unstable at 3200. Also, you may need to raise your Vdd (chipset voltage) a bit for stability at higher buses. I can use 1.6VDD (nF2) up to about 173, after which I need to use 1.8VDD to go up to 200 bus.

in my desktop before i made the switch to a mobile 2400+, I had one of the earlier unlocked 2500+'s...

BEFORE THAT, I had an 1800+ TbredA, which was running at FSB 217.

So i installed the 2500+ and was stuck at 185FSB.

I read around on some other message board and a TON of people were having luck with the L12 bridge modification, so I gathered up my balls and took an xacto knife to my chip.

Glorious! it worked like a charm my man! What the mod does is change the chip's default FSB from 333 down to 266, then you just clock it back up (and beyond). Back at that time no one really knew how or why it worked (maybe someone has figured it out by now) but some people thought maybe the chipset adjusts certain 'hidden' internal timings depending on the default FSB it detects from the processor, and maybe a 333 chip sets something too intensely, and 266 backs off a bit.

I dont know, but it worked, and its safe as long as you arent asleep or drunk when you do it.

give it a shot, Id probably put money that it will work for you :)
