Just set up a new ASUS P5B-vm and Core2Duo 6300 and the hardware monitor is showing the temp as follows:

CPU: 50 C
MB: 43 C
CPU Fan Speed: 998 RPM

Other things on that screen:
VCore Voltage: 1.26v
3.3V: 3.44v
5V: 5.04v
12V: 12.83v
 
the fan's a bit slow but, and you could be getting better, is that when you've just started the pc, or are those temps aftera few hours of running?
 
I have an MSI mobo that's about 3.5 years old and my CPU runs at 122 F at idle and about 143 F during virus scans, spyware scans, etc. I'm not sure what the temp of the board is though. I have two fans that run at about 2,700 RPMs (give or take 100).

need to compare same cpus and m/bs(if possible).
 
CPU looks a little warm to me. Warm for an idle temp anyway - if this is the idle temp it could overheat when pushed.
 
Had just started the machine after assembling.

The mobo has a bad IDE controller, wont recognize both my DVD or CD drives. Sending it back for a replacement...

whoops, sorry about that...
 
I did something stupid and turned off the raid controller in bios. Apparently thats what controls the IDE controllers too. A bios reset fixed it and now I have XP installed....

So the system has been running for about 2 hours now and the CPU and MB temp are 48 and 47 respectively in the BIOS hardware monitor. ASUS s/w temperature shows it to be 51 and is in bold red.

Is this normal for a new computer during the burn in phase? How long is the burn in phase?

What is the IDEAL CPU/HDD/MB operating temperatures at IDLE?
 
There's no such thing as a burn-in phase. Even if there were, it wouldn't apply to temperatures. Either you weren't successful in getting all four corners of your stock heatsink "locked" down, or you've got one of the concave heatsinks.
 
The fan speed seems a little slow and under what condition do you get those reading? You should run the HEAT Stress test of prime95 for 20 min and than go see the temp of your components.
 
I would turn up the CPU fan speed. It must be real quiet at 900rpm, but I think you should have it at least at 1500 if not around 2000. That alone will probably drop you about 10C.

Granted, if you don't have good airflow around the rest of the case, it might not help that much. Make sure the rest of your case has some good air flow too.
 
If you are using AS5 or something simular on the cpu it may take a while to settle in. On my current build (X2 3800+) I was getting cpu idle temp at 53c, after a couple of days of use the temp settled at 41c. I assume the paste spread nice and evenely after a while.
 
i have a 6300 also with an asus p5b and my cpu temp reads 46C with a fan speed of 2300 rpm. it was running even hotter before until i turned one of my case fans on. i don't know what's wrong, oh and i'm using a zalmann 9500 also...
