What should be the complement to my E46 M3 as a winter car? UPDATED

I currently own a 2006 BMW 330i and a 2002 M3. Both are manual-equipped. My 330i is a Sport package car and thus fairly compact inside and low to the ground. Prior to buying the M3 I used the 330i as a year-round car and have snow tires/wheels for it that I think (but am not 100% sure) will fit the M3. My M3 has a lowered Bilstein suspension and will have insufficient ground clearance as a winter car in Minneapolis, where I live.

My 330i is about 8 months from the end of its CPO warranty and has around 40K miles. It has not been particularly reliable, and at this moment has good resale value (KBB says around $20K in trade-in), so I think it makes sense to get rid of it and get a winter/practical car.

I'd like to have an SUV (a unibody/car-based one) or station wagon. I'd like to have a reasonably quick car, ideally with a manual. I would really prefer it to be under warranty and/or have Asian reliability. I care about the car handling reasonably well, being adequately quick, and having a road-oriented suspension. I also care about having Bluetooth. I won't drive off-road in any serious way so a body-on-frame SUV doesn't seem like a good idea.

I don't really care about new vs. used. I'd rather spend $30K or less, and preferably closer to $20K. AWD would be preferable - I definitely don't want something that needs snow tires.

I am thinking of a Subaru Legacy or Outback, a VW Touareg or Tiguan, or a Toyota Highlander (all used). The Audi Q cars and BMW X5 seem too expensive, and I hate the X3. Anyone have any bright ideas I haven't thought of?

Here is my 330i -

EDIT: OK, I have been driving my 330i again the last few days, and I had forgotten just what an awesome car it is. I just love it. Actually in some ways I like the steering feel and handling more than my M3, and it's an amazingly comfy, practical car. It's in nearly perfect condition and has only 41K miles. I would be foolish to get rid of it - it's not going anywhere, at least for the time being. If it gives me reliability problems this winter I will probably trade it in the spring, but for now I'm hanging on to it.

no need for a WRX since you have the m3 right? I can't really think of anything other than a Forester. There is that new 2.0t explorer. Don't think the TSX wagon is available with AWD. The only wagons with AWD apart from the Subarus that I can think of are the Germans.

Subaru /thread.

Pick your favorite, even STI is in range if chosen used, though I'd look for one that didn't winter in the snow previously (less chance of any corrosion at all).

Even if you can get by without snow tires, they'll make an immense difference. Last year was my first winter with a Subaru on snows - just incredible. Firestone Winterforce tires for an '04 Forester are only $84/each. ;)

Do you want a manual transmission, or is an auto acceptable?

wife and I grabbed a G35X cheap for our winter bird. Sadly you cannot order a G35X with manual...

I love the Touareg and would recommend one only if its under some kind of warranty. Its not the cheapest to repair...

The Porsche Cayenne-same chassis as the VW- is a marvel to drive. The Cayenne S model with the 4.5l Audi V8 is very sporty and is amazing in snow and inclement conditions. I really dont think there is a better all weather platform than the high end Cayennes.

Get a audi a4 with 80k miles.....jk :p

I know - I have driven with snows on my 330i for years. They rock.

I'd prefer a manual but will reluctantly accept an auto.

2011 Legacy GT Limited - 265hp turbo 4, 6MT, MSRP just north of 30k. The H6 is 256hp with a 5sp auto (not sure if MT is an option) at 25k-ish. ;)

What?

AWD can still spin all 4 tires if there is no traction. Believe me. I did just that on stock Mazdaspeed 6 tires (Bridgestone Potenza summer performance).

Traction = king. Doesn't matter which or how many tires are driven.

Hell I can spin snows halfway through third gear without any trouble... :awe:

I really wouldn't want to run all seasons given any chance to run snows. No comparison...

+ all of it to getting snows. AWD only helps in terms of acceleration, it does not help turning or braking. Guess which ones you care about when you're sliding sideways off the road? :awe:

In HS and college I had a 2000 crown victoria (RWD, open differential) that I drove everywhere, in every weather condition, and I never got stuck anywhere because I had good winter tires (Blizzack WS-50 FTW). It got me to the ski mountain to literally ski first tracks on snow days when there was 2 feet of powder.

Why one would spend $20,000-$30,000 on a dedicated winter vehicle and neuter it by not spending $800-$1,000 on winter tires is completely beyond me.

2005-08 Grand CHerokee with the HEMI

dont get snow tires, get on/off road's. way better :)

you MIGHT be able to get an SRT for under 30, but it would be silly as a winter vehicle

Am curious. What kind of reliability issues have you faced? I was under the impression the NA I-6s were pretty reliable (by BMW standards).

The engine itself has not been too bad, other than a couple of VANOS solenoid failures. I've had a number of other weird electronic bugs, though, including a failure of the whole fiber-optic system that runs all of the audio, which caused the sound system, bluetooth, and even the turn signal noise to stop working. This was, in fairness, caused by a failed vapor barrier in the driver's door which led to water intrusion into the floor, but God knows what it must have cost to fix - certainly thousands of dollars (it was under warranty).

Subaru outback is nice. Maybe a VW Golf R32 if you still want something compact and sporty with 4 wheel drive.

You're gonna get rid of your E90 330i? With a good set of winters, it will do you good AND it is already paid for (right?) so no new car payments and it is the sweetest NA I6 ever!!! Don't do eeet!

Mine has 110k miles and it is 10k miles past my extended warranty and maintenance. My only issue was a steering column thing a long time ago under warranty. I also added PSS9s because the sport shocks were done.

I can too, but only on actual snow. :sneaky: 270bhp can only do so much through all 4 tires on dry ground.

This.
