What should be some LAN party rules?

There is going to be a LAN party with me and some kids in the ACM club at our school in December and I want to get a list of rules together to show ahead of time to everyone. I know many of you here host them, so what rules do you have? This would be with 15-17 year olds so drinking won't be going on since its supervied by a teacher.

Oh yeah, from your past experiences, what should be done first ahead of time to avoid any troubles that could lead to hours of delay?

Anyone that doesn't shower before coming, fails to use deodorant, or farts gets sucker punched by everyone else and has to drink toilet water.

No pr0n, everyone virus-checks their PC beforehand, no warezing, and HAVE A DHCP SERVER.

A DHCP server? This will be a LAN with about 10-15 people, 15 max, more like 10 though.

Even with just 10 people, a DHCP server will make your life much easier. Trust me.

DHCP server means that there's no people with the wrong IP, subnet, or other configuration. It also means no static-IP fighting over who gets what IP, and when the latecomer shows up he doesn't 0wn the server by assigning the same address.

Just get a router and bridge it into a 10/100 switch. Problem solved.

Edit - I see this is a general consensus. 😀

Most newer hubs and switches auto-assign IPs anyways, he'll be fine as long as he doesn't use ancient equipment.

B.Y.O.B.

Bring Your Own Boobs 😀

Seriously, though, decide what games you'll play in advance so you don't have someone who shows up who decides it's a good idea to play ten thousand rounds of HOMM4 multiplayer...and we ALL know how long that can last.

?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I've never heard of that. All my equipment is new and it doesn't do that.

Well, for our lan party a while back, we had to come up with some things for us to follow...Here are some rules/advice to follow, some of wich we didnt and regretted it.
1) there MUST be food and drink provided...usually pizza works here with a coke...and everyone must clean up their own mess afterwards from these...
2) NO SPEAKERS!! (except if you wanna play background music on one of the servers or something) everyone must bring headphones...this should go without say
3) set up servers/tables/chairs/switches/router beforehand and have rough diagram of this plan..not properly planning this or allowing yourself enough time will definitely put a damper on things
4) forgot to require virusscans beforehand (edited here) You dont wanna have the klez/blaster/whatever going around clogging up your network
5) set up one server as a pure file server (if you have enough machines)..people will need patches, cracks, hacks, files, iso's, etc. and it works best if everyone has a central place to get them if needed...
thats really about it. I mean, if these are people you know/trust, then you shouldnt really have a problem. The key to a good lan party is in the planning and setup. I've never really had a problem with the gamers since they're too busy playing ut or something to get into any trouble...(unless there is alcohol)

I think he's confusing a SOHO router with a "pure" hub or switch.

block every website except a list of the ones you want to allow.

Allow access to the game servers as well obviously...

Yeah, I'm kind of lost, but all I know is that the hub/switch/router whatever the club has used in the past works just fine, so that shouldn't be a problem. THis is my first year in this group and I'm the VP so I still have some learning to do about the group.

Ok, that seems pretty good.
1) Yeah, we're gonna do that and only allow pizza/drinks in a specified area so it doesn't spill on the computers.
2) I never thought about that. I think we'll have everyone use headphones and probably some audio setup for some music.
3) Yup, we've got that all planned out
4) Good idea, actually, since this is sponsored by a teacher at a school, we will be having each person sign a paper saying they have scanned their computer. THis will also be on a seperate network from the school so we don't have troubles with viruses going around or anything.
5) Yeah, I could do a file server. I've just got to make a way to set a limit on the size, but that seems like a good idea. I'll probably end up doing it on my computer on a seperate hard drive.

No, I'm not. Then again, all the small lan parties I go to with friends always have switches AND a router for internet access, so I could be wrong.

Right, the router is acting as the DHCP server. It wouldn't be all that useful to have a switch that would do that.

Dont u need the switch to have enough jacks to plug into?

You can plug the router into the upload port of the switch and be able to cascade them together (using a straight-thru cable). Or use a crossover cable with any port on either.
