it is running windows 2000. winver says "version 5 (build 2195)." nothing about service pack. perhaps this is telling me this machine has had no service packs inistalled on it?? any other way to determine the current service pack? windows update indicates i need to install "service pack 2" and "service pack 3", which makes me assume i have sp1 (was there an sp1??). i have to find out the sp on over a hundred computers and would like to avoid having to run windows update on each one and then make assumptions based on what sp it says i need. also, can windows tell me the processor speed? i have found the cpu family and stepping, but not the speed. thanks.

Check in the control panel under the system applet. If it doesn't mention a service pack on that screen, you don't have one.

Just install SP3, it's a cumulative update.

And yes, there was an SP1 so if there is no mention of SP1 as a needed update you probably already have it.

carolinapeakbagger, go to Control Panel then Adminstrative Tools then Computer Management. Click on System Summary under System Information. The Processor line should tell you your clock speed.
