Actually, close to half of all users still use 800x600. If you are aiming at power users, go with the higher res, but for broad use, either deal with percentage widths (preferred) or aim for 800x600. In all acuality, you should make your canvas no bigger than 750 pixels wide, to account for toolbars etc, and you should know that anything taller than 450-500 will require a scroll. (surprising numbers of users NEVER even scroll :Q)

I find that 768 wide x 600 tall fits most browsers pretty well.

Much wider than that and you make LOTS of people scroll. The best bet is to get some kinda liquid design going using percentages.

My parents still use 640x480. If you ever want them at your site, you had better design for them. :p

I prefer they be <=800x(don't care about page length). I run my screen @ 1152x864 but my browser does NOT run full screen and it annoys me to heck when I have to. Much like it annoys me to have ad bars on the side.

1024x768 @ 75Hz as a MINIMUM DEFAULT shipping rez with 1280x1024 capability was a for vomit boxes was the standard for PC98 certification. It's no longer 1998, technology has improved since then. Even people who are legally blind tend to use above 800x600.

That said, make the page tall not wide. Those of us who use higher resses tend to NOT have the browser occupying the full screen, and narrow columns are better for speedreading because your eyes don't need to move. Scroll bars are evil, but vertical scroll bars are the lesser of those 2 evils (vs. horizontal). Put the most important parts at or some attention getting # links that scroll for you at the top.

This thread is probably dead, but they made a good point above. Even though my screen is at 1280x1024 my browser window is floating at 800x600. I never maximize it unless I simply can't use a page without doing so.

Part of the reason that I hate the ads on the left is that occasionally reading threads on ATOT I have to scroll left to see the entire thread, which is bad. :(:( Most of the time the thread fits perfectly in my window, but it used to always fit.

Use 800x600. Most people will use 1024x768 MIN but they will have chat windows and such on. So use 800x600 to get more people happy.
