Currently the best scanner is the Epson Perfection 1200U.

We can probably recommend your perfect scanner if only we knew:
1) Your preferred price range.
2) What you intend on scanning.
3) If price or quality is more important.
4) Mac? PC? USB?

Here's several CNET reviews of flatbed scanners

Epson Perfection 1200U (or 1200S if SCSI)

Agfa makes some decent models too, and Microtek is also OK.

Avoid Umax (except their high end stuff) because of very poor quality, and avoid any of the HP's which are coming with only a 90 day warranty. That is really lame, and tells you how much confidence they have in their own products. The higher end HP's are still one year though.

Avoid SCSI scanners. In my expirience they only run at 5MB/s and will bump all the other SCSI devices down to that speed, which isn't good. Of course if its the only SCSI device on that channel, go for it. Just for me it wouldn't be.

I am trying to sell you my UMAX 1220U, but I will be honest and tell you what scanner I recently ordered.
(BTW, I do resent the comments made earlier about UMAX as a brand. While I agree that it is not as nice as a high end epson, i think the quality is just as good as any scanner in the same price range.)

I ordered a Canon CanoScan N656U... Its tiny, and needs no bulky power adapter... it draws power from the USB cable, and therefore the USB cable is the only cable you need... I like it for its portablilty, and that is the only reason I am selling the UMAX

Chiwawa,
Forget EGAY, no point posting a pic, the image quality will be degraded. You need to tell us what you will be using the scanner for.
If its for net type stuff, high resolution is not a big deal. Made that mistake about 5 years ago when new to the net. Scanned lots of stuff at high res, lots of colors etc, the images took a couple of minutes to load, no good. Finished up downgrading colors etc so that images loaded faster. The other issue with scanners is the software bundle that comes with them. My GF bought a UMAX 2000P, real cheap. The software is not the greatest but its easy to use, one click to save images for the net, even has OCR proggie that actually works.

I have an AGFA 1212U also (the transparent imac-blue one :)) and I love it. Software is really simple to use and the scans are really nice compared to some cheap scanners my friends own.

Chiwawa626:

$60 won't get you squat, but here's something I did find. A year ago PC Magazine gave an Editor's Choice Award to the Visioneer Communications OneTouch 7600. They tested the parallel version, which at that time sold for $130. Here's the review.

It is available in parallel or USB at BUY.COM for $78 here, and BUY.COM has free shipping 9/11-9/13/00.
