What?s the better format -- DVD-R or DVD+R?

I?m getting a DVD-RW/+RW multi-drive and was wondering what media is better to use, DVD-R or DVD+R?

Leaning towards +RW right now from what I?ve read.

+ has its advantages, but regardless of that - has better overall compatability for movies AFAIK.

^ True. If it's only for backup on your own computer, +RW is the way to go. But for movies, -RW all the way, unless you're sure they aren't compatible with your DVD player. Best way to know which is best for you is to buy a combo DVD±RW drive and experiment. 😉

(edit) For more infos, see Videohelp (previously DVDRhelp.com), they have a DVD section.

-r is much cheaper then +r media. it make no sense to buy +r just for movies, I only have use for backup data.

moot point? i just wonder why +r and -r cost the same in retail shop but online discount vendor charges twice as much for +r media

Looks like DVD+R is the ticket.😀

Well of course that site is going to gush over the + format - it's written by the + Alliance. 🙂
lol 🙂

I think -R is supposed to be more compatible but really I think these days it's a moot point.

I noticed that as well...have dealt with -R and +R ..it comes down to quality of the source files and media(source and destination)

but anyway..DW800A @776 and counting 🙂

depends on what you are burning...

they both have their advantages.

when I first starte burning, + media was faster, and obviously better for data/backups... the -R I definitely found better, and worked in all of my set-top DVD players, so the -R is better for movies, but the -R is not as fast as the + media.

it's all just a huge hassle really 😛

My friend also had the same issue with NU drive but after the firm ware updated it runs like a champ .... I have a lite-on burner and have backed up ( ahem ) 50+ movies on both -R anf +R .... +r burns faster but image quality is the same on both

mine was defective, and the latest firmware did no good either

And let's not forget the magic of bitsetting on DVD+R. If you bitset all of your disks to be ID'd by the player as DVD-ROM disks, your DVD+Rs ought to be almost as compatible as DVD-R disks when it comes to playing them back in DVD video players.

Of course, most of the newer players will play just about any disk you thow at them, so it matters less and less what kind of disk you use for video with each passing day. The only real issue is with the older players.

interesting🙂

i wondered what was the difference too, like most people i bet. good to know.. esp for data. i guess i'll stick to + stuff for data, and whatever i have lying around for video which doesn't need as much error protection and stuff.

I got a Lite-on 401s DVD+R/+RW burner last year...I've only used DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. I use them for data backup and movies. As far as movies...the +R discs work in my Playstation 2, in my brother's VHS/DVD combo player, and also in my mom's VHS/DVD combo player, which is pretty much all I use for movie watching...no problems yet.

I've read in various places that Microsoft plans to back +RW. That info is kinda old tho. I hope Longhorn has drag-n-drop DVD burning like XP has drag-n-drop CD burning...I love that, lol.

I just picked up the Nu DDW-082, and I was happy to find out my set top DVD player handles both +r/+rw and -r/-rw. 🙂

Also, the guy who said +R media is more expensive? I found the opposite to be true... I just picked up a 50 pack of Ritek +r's that the Nu Tech will burn @8x for $39...seems reasonable...no?

*shrug*
