What S@h times to expect from the G4 cube

The Magicman

Hi!

I'm trying to convince myself that is no an idiotic idea to but a used Mac G4 cube (manly as a form an an "enhanced" and networked DVD Player).

What seti times can I expect from a 450MHz G4?
There in no entry in team LabChops database.
BTW:
Telling me that it would be better to run Rc5 on it is NOT a way of talking me into it 😉

The Magicman - I would then seriously ask you to think about the "Processor trade" that we have going on here (eg., I run OGR on my K62/450 for danzigrules and he runs RC5 for me on one of his cellys). Doing this maximizes the output for the Team. Because the Mac client is a screensaver-only client, that makes it worse.

What SETI did to the Mac client is a disgrace. All you have to do is go over to the MacAddicts forums and read about the carnage. The poor team is dropping production like mad due to the unoptimzied client. There is no Altivec engine enhancements there.

This mess started with 3.0 (which doubled the time from 2.x) and got worse with 3.03, which doubled it again. Some there keep saying "it's for the science...". Well... that's just fine and dandy, but if you're keeping a machine running 24/7, it's also the electric bill and getting as good a production out of your machine as you can - considering you're volunteering it for their cause!

The TLC bench page has a database with results for 3.0. There are 2 G3 500s listed that were running 3.0 at ~7hrs/WU. Drop that down some to account for the G4, and then double what you get to estimate what it would do with 3.03.

I would gladly trade you one of my Xeon II 400 1Mb procuessors (~11hrs/WU) for the G4's RC5 production! 😉

I know you don't want to hear this, but I totally agree with Poof. 🙂 I'd run RC5 on it for sure...G4's rock at RC5.

To sweeten the deal, instead of the Xeon II 400 1Mb ~11.16hrs/WU for your G4, I'd give you my alpha's production (it did the TLC 3.03 bench in 10.37hrs/WU when running @433Mhz - it's a 21164). That's about 2.5 WUs/day.

I'll just move my own SETI production over to my Xeon II running RC5 (the other processor is already running SETI)!

😀

On this kind of subject my Sparc 450's used to do 16 WU/day on 1.3 SETI client...
On 3.03 client they are lucky to do 4 WU/day.....

Client "optimised" to favour the home user rather than us Seti@work people ????

Regarding Seti@WORK..

Do You think my boss would kill me without a second thought when I'm _trying_ to install S@H(W) on our local RS6000 farm?. 😉 😉 😉

The Magicman: I'm going great with Seti@Work! 🙂 Honestly, I've had zero problems with the client on work machines. I just make sure that any updates and/or fixes are performed on my own time. No guilt that way... 😉

Assimlate!!!!!!!!! 🙂

I don't think he'd kill you if you had already gotten his permission, like SETI wants...

But haven't you been around long enough to know that already? Is this some kind of humor that doesn't come through too well from German or to me? 😕

P.S. I agree with Poof too. Especially since I was one of the main instigators of this processor trading. But just FYI, G4's are about three times as good, clock for clock, as PIIIs. So you might consider holding out for a >=600MHz PIII... 😉

Heres an idea.. if you want to get a g4, how about you install some linux on it, and then run the linux based seti client (if there is one, havent looked it up, not really interested)..

I'm thinking about purchasing a G3 or G4 just to install linux on, just for the heck of it.

So you might consider holding out for a >=600MHz PIII...

I'm waiting for Max to post my alpha's bench result in the TLC bench table, but running @433Mhz, it does the bench in 10.37 hrs, comparable to the P3 600s listed there at ~10.30 hrs.

And besides, my P3 600 is running @990 right now so anyone with a 600 should at least be OC'd to 800, if not higher!!! 😉
