What ruins (MMO)RPGs the most?

What do you think ruins MMORPGs the most? My vote goes for the powerleveling. I usually don't mind it, and am quite good at it, but i have to admit that it ruins the game. Think about it - most players spend most of their in-game time mindlessly killing stuff just to gain levels. It can be fun for awhile in some games, but in others (think Blood runs in Diablo II) it's just horrible. Also, i know that everyone hates the fee, but before you vote for it, make sure that it's what you want to vote for. Would you be happier if the fee stayed and all the other problems disappeared, or vice versa? Also, if you can think of more reasons, post away.

i've been tryin to log into the server for 15 minutes already for DAOC, their server went down when i was trying to take care some business...

Honestly i don't mind the fee. What's $10/month? I would much rather see stuff like powerleveling, hacking and lag go away than the fee. Hell, i'd even pay $50/month (and i'm not rich) for a game where the fee is my one and only complaint.

Bugs/Duping, it completely ruins the work other's have done. It kills the economy. I mean what good does my super sword do me if 50 people dupe it?

Before I run to google, where can I find more info about these games? Would having a dialup connection ruin the gameplay?
Would Asheron's Call count as a MMORPG?

Yes, Asheron's Call IS an MMORPG. Combat in them is usually turn or speed-based, so connection speed doesn't matter THAT much. I have cable and my usual ping in AC was 150-200.

Having to camp in order to power-level to make your character playable really stinks. In EQ, there isn't a whole lot of low level content. Getting into new and different zones can be difficult without buying a port from someone. I found myself camping orcs up to level 7 or 8, then goblins to 10, then chessboard to 12, then orcs and bandits to 14 or 15, then I went to lava storm. Leveling keeps getting slower too...

I have a very irregular schedual, so I would typically only be able to get on-line for a couple of hours, or only be on-line VERY late at night. Thus, finding good people to group with was difficult. Finally, I canceled my subscription because I hadn't had time to play in months. Maybe someday I'll re-subscribe, but its doubtful.

Ive played UO and EQ extensivly(60th Cleric in EQ)and id have to vote none of the above. What I feel is most detrimental to any online game, let alone MMORPG's, is the lack of customer interaction with the developers. I cant tell you how many times ive seen patch changes in EQ that completly were uneeded and the opposite of what players were complaining about in game and out. Somtimes you wonder what the hell these developers are thinking. Players have legitimate complaints and/or suggestions to fix or improve gameplay, that dont even get a once over glance, but if that wolf pelt you just got accidentally sells for 8 silver when it should be 7, the server are brought down for emergency patches(well, maybe not THAT extreme).

P.S Anyone who votes for the monthly fee is a socialist. You think that server hardware and bandwidth is free youre playing on?

I think excessive gameplay changes destroy the game

To have characters that are highly powerful rendered completely useless in 1 update is just not right

What killed the MMORPG for me was when UO went carebear

The whole beauty of UO was the fact that there was the element of danger ever present, and they just nerfed PK's and stuff until it just wasn't fun anymore (among other gameplay changes)

Can you add an "All of the above" option? Every one of those are reasons I can't get into MMORPGs.

But, if I had to pick one I'd say "The need to constantly powerlevel to enjoy high-level content." Some people don't have 5-6 hours a day to spend on a game. I want to get in and do cool stuff without having the game be my life.

I've seen a lot of people complain about this, but if they had not done this, they would have had an extremely small, yet loyal following. I have no problem with the element of danger being ever present, but the game was just stupid when people just run around killing everyone else in sight, with no rhyme or reason to why they do it, other than to get their kicks from doing it. There were people that roleplayed this right, but there were entirely too many that just senselessly killed everyone in sight, and for no good reason. That's not a MMORPG, that's MMODiablo2. I've been away from UO for some time, and have been debating about getting back into it. I enjoyed playing in Trammel because I don't enjoy getting PK'd just because I accidentally took 1 step outside of town. If more people actually roleplayed the PK'ing, it would have been enjoyable, but the fact that it was random and senseless took all of the fun out of it.

BTW, my vote was for server lag in crowded areas at peak time. That last time I was in UO you actually could not move an inch if you were in Britain at peak usage times because of the lag. Not sure what they can do about this, however, it might just have to be a fact of life for these kind of games. They can't create massive servers with huge bandwidth just for peak times, as all that money would go to waste during non-peak hours.

That is the reason I quit UO. The "2 facet" thing was farking retarded... all the pussies, gimps, and newbs (read: 99% of players) went to Trammel where they weren't allowed to kill a fly. I remember the days where you were overjoyed to come back from a dungeon with 5k or make a successful mining run. Staying away from the "evil" pks was half the fun, it made it exciting. I played both hunter and hunted and I loved it. When they made the 2 worlds thing, they killed the game.

I do agree with you though, that there were too many a$$holes that ran around killing everything and everyone in sight. The spawnkillers and rez killers really really pissed me off, as well as the ones that were just there to ruin the game... thats why I voted for the "Idiots and immature brats" option. I enjoyed pking, but there were too many morons that ruined the game by overdoing it.

Yeah, for me it was a close toss-up between server lag and immature brats. I don't really like the new UO that much better, though I'm not sure they could have controlled the rampant PK'ers any other way (I also don't like how you can max out your 700 skill points in a matter of a week, and have the money for a house in another week). They tried a few options, then opted for the dual facet in final frustration. Of course, you hit the nail on the head. What they did, they did to appeal to 99% of the people playing UO, and to bring in new blood. I'm not sure UO would still be around if they had not done what they did. I actually picked up UO:Lord Blackthorn's Revenge, but have not installed it yet. I think it's a once a year thing, where my curiosity gets to me and I have to go log back in and see what's happening.

All right, here are some things. What really killed me in EQ was twinkers. If you dont know those are people who have a high level charecter and put good gear on a lower lever chatecter. It really sucks when I started my monk and people would have the best weapons at level 8. Or would have 50,000plat worth of gear. something i cant even fathom. Another thing that just sucked was the fact that good items where really hard to get, at least for a monk so it just made me hate the twinkers even more. God, just thinking about them right now makes me mad. And they would go off and say "its just a game, chill" and its like WTF! I am paying 10$ a month for this not to mention the hundred some odd dollars I paid for the game + expansions. So screw you if I upset you when i tell you its friggin' ruining the game when you twink you selfish bastards...

all right... no more venting...

DAOC was all right except for the fact that the monsters sucked. It got to a point where everything had a pattern and it sucked. And there was hardly any player interaction.

On a lighter side I really Liked the socal aspect of the EQ. I liked how you could talk to everyone and interact with people. That was really nice. It really brought me into the game real nice. I could get help or directions to places when I was new and what not.

For all D2 & LoD playings:
Diablo 2 and LoD are pointless now! Too many dupes, scammers, and hackers. Whats the point of doing MF runs to get a Windforce, when some other guy can just dupe a hojillion of them! Sure it's nice to have a legit Windforce or whatever, but I doubt anyone's gonna believe you. What do I do now? Trade off everything for SoJ's 🙂
