What rpg's are on the horizon?

I've been feeling like all I play is fps, so I'm looking to get back to rpg a bit. I've played WoW and enjoyed it a lot, Oblivion was alright, and those are the only games that stand out in my mind right now. What it boils down to is that I'm looking for a solid rpg that gives me a lot of options for character developement and such, and something that I can put tons of hours into and not get bored. MMORPG is fine as long as there is no monthly fee.

So whats coming out that fits the bill?

If you have not played these story driven RPGs that focus on plot, dialog, and character development, then be sure to play them, as they are some of the best RPGs ever made:

  • Baldurs Gate 2
  • PlaneScape: Torment

The only story driven RPG that could possibly hope to compete with those two games that is "on the horizon" would be Bioware's spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate 2 called Dragon Age.

Roma Victor is an incredibly open MMORPG

It's pretty small though.

Graphics aren't really great, but I haven't checked on them after their big update

I didn't end up playing it because I don't have time
Looks good to me though

it costs $40 US
Edit: $40 one time fee that is

Linky

Hope you like it

Hellgate is the definition of boring. There doesn't seem to be even a sprinkle of an ounce of challenge in that game. You don't even need the skill/upgrade system because of the simplistic AI and unlimited ammunition. If Diablo was anything like Hellgate, I'm glad I never played it. I have more fun with a $20 beta RPG called Mount & Blade - there is no story and it gets as repetitive as Hellgate, but the combat is the best I've ever seen in any RPG.

HGL and Diablo 1&2 are not RPGs, people need to stop labeling them as such.

Schadenfroh listed the definitive RPGs on the late 90s and early 00s. NWN1 is also a classic, not because of the campaign that shipped with the game, but because of the thousands of player crafted modules that were far superior to what Bioware shipped. These modules offer the full gambit of gaming preferences, from Diablo-style hack and slash to making PST look like a game of checkers. Many people also enjoyed NWN2, however, the game does lack polish right now. Currently NWN2 also doesn't have the sheer number of modules as NWN1 does, but NWN2 is less than 1 year old whereas NWN1 is over 6.

Have you already played:

2D isometric: PS:T, BG 1-2, Fallout 1-2 & Tactics

3D:
TES Morrowind
Neverwinter 1 + expnasions & user mods
Neverwinter 2 + expansion
Star Wars KOTOR 1 & 2
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

If you have a 360, Mass Effect from Bioware is out at the end of next month.

Fire Emblem for the GBA is excellent. As is Golden Sun.

I remember dungeon siege being fun, but very straight forward with next to 0 story or side quests. just playing with 8 characters and picking and choosing their gear was the best part. Also good looking graphics for its time.

what is it about forums that makes people reply with the total opposite of the question asked?

not that he probably doesn't mind getting suggestions of older games, but he asked what was coming out soon. people are even giving him console options in the PC forum...

I second Mount & Blade. It is good budget fun right now, but don't expect anything too deep.

In my case, because Mass Effect is from Bioware, and it's console-only.

There is no PC version.

But it's from Bioware!

It was my way of letting him down easy, for there is no hope for story driven RPGs in a world where the remnants of Black Isle Studios (Obsidian Entertainment) is under the thumb of Atari, EA owns Bioware, and Activision shot the rest of the survivors of Black Isle Studios (Troika).

Welcome to a world of shooters with stats and ability points, also known as action RPGs.

He just asked for RPGs and MMOs. He is an FPSer for god's sake :p

I've played WoW and enjoyed it a lot, Oblivion was alright, and those are the only games that stand out in my mind right now.

Hellgate: London would be perfect ... a 35-45 hour SP "hack 'n slash" experience and "MMO"
:D
... but .... there is always a 'but' ... the MMO-part is free BUT you pay for extended content if you choose.

We cant give the guy any help because there is none to give. The only thing worth talking about is Mass Effect and thats console.

Everything thats worth a damn on PC is in the past, not the future. Bioware just got swallowed up and that snuffed out our remaining hope.

Though I wasnt blown away by Neverwinter Nights 2, the recent expansion looks pretty sweet.
Thats it.
Nothing else.
You may as well sit down for table top D&D or Shadowrun or Rifts because thats the only way you'll get a good role playing experience.

Space Siege, Q1 2008. Looked interesting from the previews, although in a recent article Chris Taylor sort of hinted at dumbing down his games in the future - or in his words, "rewarding the player."

Definitely get the Baldur's Gate II Collection (both Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal). Yes--it's an older game, but you won't be sorry!!! I've never played Planescape, but it is very highly regarded as well.

If mount and blade ever turns into a real game it would be amazing.

After the dungeon siege series I'm not sure he can dumb them down much more...

I really liked the mechanics in that game - pitty the world could not be modded (i know there are some crude attempts to hack in slight changes to the binary - but you can't build a new world with it). There is a very active (but small) wizardry crowd over at vn boards. Oh well now that the company is defunct...
