I saw oblivion coming out recently and the hype around it. I haven't ever played a RPG before and would like to try it out. Like the title say I only played FPS games like FEAR, Half Life, Doom, Quake, Call of Duty and some racing games.

Any suggestions on what I should start with?

Preferably something thats cheap and may be came out a little while ago so that I can get it for real cheap and try it out. If I like it I will start investing in more recent games.

I generally don't like the 3rd person view, so I will skip Baldur's gate.
KOTOR looks very nice. I think I will get that one. Thanks man.

Any other suggestions??

You must try Deus Ex (the first one). It's a classic. FPS/RPG hybrid so it may be more palatable to you at first. The graphics shouldn't be too bad for even today.
I second KOTOR, very very good game, I'd say it's also a classic. Make sure it's the first one.

apparently BG2 also ranks way up there but I haven't played it myself.

KOTOR is definately a good one. I prefer the Xbox version though. Just something about it that seemed to fit better as a console game, but that is just my opinion.

I have never played this game before, but Deus Ex is supposed to be good. I think it is actually an RPG/FPS combination. Once again, I have never played it though.

Morrowind is also an alright choice (since it is probably around $20 now) and is the game before Oblivion. The graphics really are dated by today's standards, but some of the quests can still be fun.

Lastly, you can't go wrong with Oblivion (especially Xbox 360 version). Since launch, I have over 15 hours in it (that is A LOT for me over four days) and I feel overwhelmed with how quick the quests are piling up in my journal and I cannot seem to finish them quick enough (this is a good thing). I have barely touched on the main quest, just started quests for TWO of the guilds (there are like 5 or 6 with in depth quest lines), explored like six dungeons (over 200 according to Bethesda), and now I am trying to cure my vampire disease. That is just to give you a small idea of how much is in the game.

So I definately think that Oblivion is a GREAT choice for a first RPG. The learning curve is steeper than say KOTOR, but there is less "what now?" moments than in Morrowind (compass targetting helps A LOT in a good way). Sure there are a few gripes about it (I was actually worried about it because most games that I "read into" months before usually turn out bad), but it is the best RPG that I have played to date and I can seriously see myself putting over 100 hours into it (I am not hardcore enough for 1000+ hours). So if $50 is not super expensive for you, Oblivion is worth it.

coming from fps games also, i'd say for pc just go with something that has a skill-based combat system. i didn't like KOTOR because the combat didn't feel interactive after coming from an fps background. guild wars is fun if you have friends to play through it with. WoW has great pvp combat but now the only way to keep the balance is to pve all the time and that gets old REAL fast. i thought Freelancer was a good transition game to rpgs and you can get it really cheap. it's a space sim, not a true rpg, but it's got combat, exploration, leveling up, and the whole open-ended approach that is kinda refreshing to an fps gamer. plus you aim with the mouse and you can play co-op. oblivion sounds like a great choice also. i would get it but i want to play it on a system where i can max out the graphics.

Lot of nice ideas. Guys I really appreciate your input. I will give these games a try. So I will start with Duex Ex(looks nice), Kotor(looks awesome), Freelancer (looks great too). If I like these ones, then I will move in to oblivion.

Get Deus Ex, it was my first PseudoRPG when I made my transition from first person shooters to RPGs, with the exception of BattleField 2, I only play RPGs now.

Neverwinter Nights was the first RPG game I played and I was hooked. Great story line IMO.

If you do like that, you should also try Neverwinters Night! And at least the SoU expansion. It was better in some ways than KOTOR. Both are from BioWare. Morrowind, the ES: III game, was huge, and still readily available, but I just could not deal with the change in controls from anything previous that Bethesda produced. I never got beyond the opening segment.

i HATED rpgs . . . . [tried MANY and gave up after a few hours] . . .

UNTIL i got KotOR . . . absolutely awesome and i recently bought and am nearly done with KoTOR II [in fact, Oblivion is just sitting around and waiting for me to finish KotOR II - today, i hope].

IF you like Star Wars, you will love KotOR . . . it is far better than anything since the original story and like watching a great book come to life. . . . combat is real time but sucess depends on your "stats", not like FPS combat.

DeusEx is great but the gfx are really dated . . . and it is more FPS than RPG . . . DE-IW is really nice looking but "dumbed down" from the original [actually i like it better, but i am in the minority].

Seconded. A lot of people skip over the Gothic titles, but they really are some cool games. Control scheme does require a little tweaking though.
