BG2 just for Minsc and his hampster Boo. Best RGP characters ever. If you get the game you have to have Minsc in your party. NWN kicks butt too but no Minsc :(.

Kotor 1 or 2 should be in your price range. If you do go for NWN, buy the "Diamond" edition, it's $20 and includes both expansion packs. Check the thread in Software for more information on additional modules.

What about Sacred and Sacred Underworld? Diablo clone at its best. Has a decent story line and is a pretty neat hack n slash type game, lots of weapon and armour upgrades, large monster variety to fight.

Others are saying BG series is better, but if you do not like turn based games, then the BG series isnt for you.

After them, BG2 has the best story, NWN was a lot of fun and there are many free mods, Morrowind was also fun though the combat is weak compared to the other 2. I'd rate IWD last since it was just story-free hack n slash.

Quote FTW.

Neverwinter Nights is a great game. I only played a little bit of it, but it was pretty in depth and easy to get into and has a lot of gameplay hours.

Morrowind, on the other hand, was WAY too in depth. They ask a million questions when creating your character, there's about 30 pages worth of stuff to read from every townsmember, there is no real explanation of what to do or where to go....well maybe it's good and you can get into it...but I found it was way too much and didn't have 3 hours of time just to get started on it. Not my thing.

Thanks everyone for the insights. Sounds like Baldur's Gate 2 might be a good way to go. I think Morrowind might be a little to in depth and slow moving for my first RPG in quite some time. On the other hand Icewind Dale sounds like it has a little more action, just not a great story.

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions of other games too.

see, the problem with RS, is that it's a game for kids. there is no storyline and thus, it get's boring pretty quickly. not like you can do much once you finish the quests and get full rune. so what's the point? and graphics suck.

OP, if you can spend a little more, Guild Wars is an incredibly good game. It's very fun.

Baldur's Gate 2. Hope you have played BG1? If not then it's the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy the world's *B E S T* RPG ever. You can even move your party from BG1 to BG2. Back then, when I learned that I actually could load my BG1 party in BG2 I've replayed BG1 so I could play my chars through the whole saga. Astounding music, cool character decelopment, long and elaborated story line, nice gfx. I mean that has to be the winner here.

You'll need these:
Baldur's Gate
BG: Tales of the Sword Coast (expansion)
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
BG2: Throne of Bhaal (expansion)

Magnificent.

Icewind is also nice and I recommend it ofc, just like all the other games you have listed, but BG is, by far, the best of them.

Actually I have not played Baldur's Gate 1 yet. Perhaps i should play that first. I just figured Baldur's Gate 2 was probably better graphics and improved gameplay.

Plus it's $9.99 on Amazon

There is not one story line... there are many.
The point after you achieve full rune, is to then become a member and persue higher goals... such as full dragon armor or other special items, more quests, member of all guilds, 99 in all levels, etc.

the good thing is new things are added every week. not every game you play does that.

How does BGII look on new machines with high end monitors running insane resolutions? I haven't played it since I was on a 17" CRT back "in the day". I wonder how it would look on my 2001WFP.

Ninja Burger can be had for six bucks and change at many finer RPG-vending establishments.

In what other RPG do you deliver fast food and use Ninjitsu to smite the foul minions of Samurai Burger?

If you're stuck without friends, BGII is awesome.

"Go for the eyes, boo. Go for the eyes!"
-Minsc, BGII character.

Boo is Minsc's hamster.

So I just bought a used copy of Baldur's Gate II off ebay for $7 shipped. I figure I should get my money's worth there

Very pixelated. I installed it on my desktop last year, and it didn't look too great. Still an awesome game, however. I'm tempted to reply it myself since I have it floating around here somewhere and my laptop can't handle any really modern games.
