I don't mean for this to turn into a neff post but, I personally was shocked after purchasing Audio Catalyst and then downloaded CDEx for free! I just want to know if you all agree that the Lame encoder engine really does sound better than Xing.

While I love AC's speed and ease of use it seems CDEx produces a better end product especially if the CD you're using isn't in all that great of shape!

I 'm just looking for some opinions and if you have something even better than both, I'd like to know.

Morpheus, LimeWire, or IRC. ;)

I used AudioCatalyst when I had CD's to rip. It's been awhile so I'm open to trying some other program if/when I purchase a CD again. I suspect that at that time the price of winter jackets in hell will be at an all time high.

I used AudioCatalyst for most of my collection, but since I can't put pir8ed software on my work computer I actually use Musicmatch Jukebox trial version to rip and encode my tiny collection on the work PC...

Audiocatalyst and Lame --- no comparison.

I used audiocatalyst to rip most of my cd's a couple years ago. I thought the quality was good, and was happy with that. A few months ago, I tried using RazorLAME to encode. The sound is very different; LAME does a much better job than audiocatalyst.

Now I'm re-ripping (cdex) and re-encoding (LAME) all my songs...

CDEx and LAME. Tried EAC but it acted weird with my DVD-ROM. It was also very intolerant of less-than-pristine discs. I use "paranoia mode" in CDEx and have yet to hear a pop or click in any of my rips.

LAME is awesome, just make sure you use version 3.89 or higher. They changed the ATH type with 3.89 and it sounds a bit better. If you want good quality, use VBR mode (variable bitrate), not CBR (fixed bitrate). In exchange for longer encoding time, a VBR MP3 sounds better than a CBR MP3 of the same filesize.

Xing should be banished!

The one I like to use, is EAC,
Lotsa' options to choose, and its free!
Look at me, I made a rhyme,
I should do this all the time!
