Man, finding a job with little experience is a pain in the ass. It took me over 3 months to find a job. I almost had to resort to working at Meijers before I got this one...I had actually already been hired by them.
Monster, dice and the likes probably aren't going to be much help right now for a few reasons:
1. Recruiters using those sites have a TON of experienced people to choose from/look over. Chances are they won't even look at your resume, or if they do they won't consider you because there are 1000 other people with more experience
2. The job market is horrible right now, we're in a recession...lots of people out of jobs, not many people looking to hire
3. You don't really have a chance to sell yourself, because all they see is your resume, which is probably not very impressive.
I tried a bunch of different resources for my job search, but what ended up working for me was a local employment agency. For 3 months they took a huge chunk of my pay (my company paid them $16/hour they paid me $10.30/hour), but $10.30 is still much better than the $7.50 I would have made at Meijer...and now that my 3 months are up, I'm working for my company making $17.50.
It may be worth it to look into one of those type places; they have a lot of incentive to find you a job because it makes them a lot of money, and because they're local they don't have as many people to choose from as an online agency.
Other methods I tried that failed:
Every online job search I could find.
Applied to several big companies that said they were hiring on their website.
Went through the phone book and called a bunch of computer places, asking if they were hiring - none were. A few said I could drop of my resume anyway, so I did.
Found one place that was actually hiring, but after they looked at my resume they said they wanted someone with certification. (Yeah right, I'm a full time student, and I work full time, when the hell have I had time to get certified?)
Finally gave in and tried an employment agency. (Westaff)
Applied to 5 or 6 nearby Meijers as well as Best Buy and Circuit City. - Only one of those Meijers got back to me...had an interview and got the job...was to start in one week.
Got a call from Westaff, they had an interview for me to go to, but it was a programming job. I'm an excellent programmer, but didn't have any real world experience with it. I went anyway and brought a sample of a program I had just been working on for fun. They were reasonably impressed with the program, and the fact that they were hiring me through a temp/employment agency made them willing to risk hiring me even though I didn't have a proven track record, because they wouldn't be obligated to hire me if I wasn't any good.
This is getting long. Basically, here's my final advice: Have a sample program or two that you have written very well and fully documented, and try a local temp/employment agency. Good luck.
