Look on photo sites like hp's and shutterfly etc. They usually list recommended resolutions for photo sizes.

at that res you will print 10.24"x7.68" at 300dpi for print. Stretching it a little would matter much..but the more you enlarge it the picture will start to soften.

the more the better. Just in case you want to make print bigger than a 4x6 later on. But i think 2MP should be fine for a 4x6

3 (2.something higher than 5) for 8x10, scale down if you want 4x6
recommended 4+ since most ppl take pix in jpeg, scale down if you want 4x6

note that since 8x10 is a different aspect ratio than 4x6, you have to do some fudging.

This question is hard to answer as it varies based on print method.

Generally speaking more is better, however 1536x1024 is enough to make a decent 8x10 with most lab systems.

If you are thinking about upsampling an image for printing at a lab, then you are better off leaving that to the lab.

Well keep in mind monitors are usually about 96 pixels per inch. (well my 1600x1200 20" is 100 pixels per inch)
So if you're happy with the look of them on your monitor at that res figure out the pixels you need. Id figure that 150 pixels/in would provide a pretty descent photo print.

so 1200x 1500 approx.
(1.8 million pixels)

That is a 2mp camer would be "okay"
3mp and above would be good.
