What resolution is needed to print standard size photographs?

3 mp shoud cut it

and if you're title really said everything, then why did you add so many words to your message?
 
From Costco:

Print Size Minimum image resolution required
4 x 6 640x426 pixels
5 x 7 1050x750 pixels
8 x 10 1280x1024 pixels
Wallet Prints 419x279 pixels

(I'd recommend higher though)
 
I'm not sure about what resolution you "need", but 4x6 prints from my 3.2MP camera (2048x1536) always look great to me, assuming of course that it's a good picture to begin with. (There will be some cropping due to different aspect ratio if your camera is 4:3 like most seem to be, of course)
 
Make sure you have the right DPI too. If you want to seriously print an image, make sure your image is at least 180dpi.

Say I wanted to print a 4x6 at 300 PPI, I should be able to resize my pictures to 1200x1800?

I'm just curious because some my digital files are all 3264x2448 and taking up like 4MB per picture. It just seems like a waste when I know I'll never print anything over 4x6 and probably wont print anyway.
 
does it matter? my printer always resize it for me. regardless of 4mb or 2mb size. prints out fine, but my mistake is buying the canon Pixma i4200 with their chipped ink cartridge.
