probably a repost, but I'm bored waiting on a copy job at work ;)

I was raised Christian (Catholic) by mostly a-religious parents. they forced my sister and I to go through the motions until we completed confirmation (should we ever want to get married in a church someday) and then stopped caring about whether or not we went to church.

I did go to Catholic (Jesuit) school, though.

Raised in a Christian house, my father was a pastor, and still am Christian.

mine mirrors yours aside from the religious themed schooling, haven't been in a church (except for weddings/funerals) since the confirmation and have no plans to ever go again.

Roman Catholic. Attended Our Lady of the Bleeding Knuckles grammar school, Sister Mary Vicious, Principal. God hates you because everything you do is bad. You must sing and confess and go to church. For the rest of your life. And if you kiss His ass enough, he MIGHT let you see a picture of heaven...but being that you're probably going to burn anyway, you better keep praying. And stop looking at Suzie! You aren't married! Oh, my son, are you going to BURN.

So yeah, I stopped practicing a long time ago. I've been pretty much anti-organized religion for 20 years now.

I was raised by a Jew and a Catholic. We attended synagogue a couple times, I went to a few Catholic masses, and we went to a Unitarian Church regularly for quite a few years. In spite of that obviously staunch religious upbringing, I somehow ended up an agnostic atheist. Go figure.

Also, why do so many people misspell atheism? Is it the "I before E" thing? Look at that list; every single entry save two ends in "ism" and yet we have "athiesm" as an entry. What is our children learns in a schools?

Recovering Catholic here.

I like that. I will use it to describe my religious affiliation in the future. But wait...that might imply that I've moved onto another religion. Nevermind then. Good description, nontheless.

Baptist. I'm an agnostic atheist now though. I never really had any interest in it but I was forced to go.

Atheism and Agnosticism are not religions. They are both variations of "none."

My mom made me go to Lutheran sunday school until I was about 9 or 10. I protested it every week and did everything in my power to not go. Managed to delay it until we were late quite a few times, and then, I always got in trouble when I was there too. I hated it. It was boring and too hot. Also, I didn't believe anything they told me since I could have made up more realistic stories myself.

I figured there was a difference between "meh. who cares about that stuff?" (eg: agnostic) versus "OMG GOD IS DEAD AND ANYONE WHO THINKS OTHERWISE IS DUMB!" (eg: atheism) :p

There is a difference between apathetic agnosticism "meh who cares" vs regular agnosticism "we cannot know if god exists or not". And completely seperate is atheism "there is no proof, and therefore the null hypothesis is that god does not exist".

I was born in an apathetic agnostic household, and then became atheist. My parents continued not to care. :whiste:

I was raised with just a touch of Christianity. Went to Sunday school for about a year when I was in 3rd grade (which I actually liked, Old Testament Stories can be pretty cool) and was schlepped to church a couple of times at Xmas & Easter. I gave up on any pretense of believing in god when I was 18.

None. Zero mention of religion in my household.

Same here - closest I could see was Agnostic, so I chose that one.

Thirded. We would discuss religion in a historical/social context, but there was really no metaphysical discussion about the nature or existence of a god, and certainly not the assumption of one. My dad had me read the bible when I was a teenager "so I would know what everyone's talking about."

As I've gotten older, I've developed a lot of respect for the traditional, ritualistic, and social aspects of religion (I attend a synagogue regularly), but I still see no reason to particularly believe in a god of any kind.

I am shocked that so many people were raised in Christian households... None of my friends growing up ever went to church. Then again, my state is apparently the least religious in the country, so that might have something to do with it.
