What REALLY happens to those crazy Ebay auctions?

You know when people actually bid crazy amounts on stupid things? Does the seller really get charged with the enormous fees and does the buyer really pay? I can't think of any recent auctions as an example but you know what I'm talking about....

Their's nothing "stupid" about a chicken breast in the shape of a pope:
