I remember when I first read about Horizons like 3 years ago. Wow what an amazing game. Now I know why it sucked when it was finally released....

Once, a long long time ago on a website far far away I read about a great game ? and No, it?s not Star Wars Galaxies. The idea was a step beyond the rest, a truly next generation game complete with dragons, race-wars, and family systems - a living world.

Sadness... I almost want to fund him myself so that he can get a second chance, but of course, I don't have that kind of resource.

I was extremely interested in this game when I heard about it a couple years back. After the delays, & all the changes to the game itself, I was left totally disgusted in what it had become. This article did bring this unjustice back to the light of day, & back into my mind aswell. Sad to see that the gaming industry is now filled up with a bunch of shady finacial advisors, all the meanwhile, the actual talent that it takes to make these games, is slowly being neutered. Too many cookie cutter game designs are being supported by too many ignorant consumers. Only when we stop buying all the repeat garbage titles that come out, & they all start to fold, will people start to realize just how valuable these creative minds are worth. And just maybe, they will give them the freedom to make something truly unique & amazing.

Sounds as if I would of really enjoyed the original creation. Sad to see the man leave something he loved.

Horizons was always lacking funds and the creator was always talking about how revolutionary it was. Personally I didn't buy it from the beginning but I entertained the idea. I think the main page was www.dawn.org or something. There was going to be all kinds of cool things, like you would be born into the world under a parent who was really a character started before yours. And monsters wouldn't respawn, they would breed and could die out / etc. I'm not suprised that it didn't end up being everything they dreamt it up to be.

Take any "pie in the sky" game design by someone who hasn't programmed a similar application on the relevant platform with a big grain of salt. Compromises sometimes have to be made to get games out the door before development money runs out.

That said, the takover maneuvers described in that account are pretty sad if accurate. Not surprising, per se, but sad.

Very entertaining for a short while.....while you leveled up to reach your prestige class. Unfortunately, you can reach it in just a few days of moderate playing. After that, it is as generic and cookie cutter as they come. I played the CoH and Lineage 2 betas and wasn't impressed with either.....I'm not gonna spend another penny on these things until these developers give us something that hasn't been done a hundred times over.
