i am new the oc i dont plan on doing it until later on but i want to buy the stuff that will be good for it now so when i want to oc i will be ready. what is the difference between ddr400 and those higher ones like ddr500. they cant be faster in the board because the board only supports ddr400 so why do people buy ddr500? what ram should i get?

my comp is going to be somthing like this

a64 3200 socket 939
nf4 board probably my dfi
x800xt

if u need more info on the comp to decide what ram i should get tell me. i want to oc later on so make sure u get good ram for oc

The higher the DDR number (DDR500) the higher the ram will run. So if you overclock your 200Mhz FSB to 250Mhz, DDR500 would run 1:1 with the processor.

hmm i dont get it

can someone tell me like he did with more info on it and makes more since i am totaly new to this oc'ing

The speed of a processor is the the multiplier times the front side bus (fsb). For example I run my XP rig at 11.5 x 200=2300Mhz. A system typically runs most efficiently when the memory runs at an even multiple of the fbs. So for my system, pc3200 DDR400 (200Mhz x 2) is the most efficient. Faster RAM allows you to increase your fsb while keeping your RAM at at an even multiple of the fbs. Faster fbs with the same multiplier = faster CPU. Also, most CPU's are multiplier locked in some way, so increasing your fbs is an easy way to OC.
