What ram setup should be faster in 3GB DDR2 usage?
it is a dual channel ddr2 mobo with 4GB limit

=>slot1:2GB slot2:1GB

shouldn't make any difference, but I would put 2GB in the first slot, and 1GB in the second slot.

Slot 1 & 3: 1GB. Slot 2 & 4: 512MB.

But since you don't have that, it won't matter.

+1 this move you into dual channel mode at least with Intel® processors giving better overall memory bandwidth.
