I would like to purchase more (cheaper than dell) ram for my server. I'm not sure exactly what i need. It is a home server to be used as a dev machine and i would like to keep the ability to scale all the way to at least 24GB down the road, what would be my most cost effective options? (atm i have 8GB in 4X2GB so i could scale to 24GB if i kept filling slots the same way , 12X2GB)
I'm rusty on best practices , am i getting a speed difference if i fill all of my slots & better off getting more 2GB sticks if i'm not planning to go over 24GB or should i consolidate and make sure i can scale all the way to the max later on? What brand of ram would be the most cost effective (nothing as random as noname but not server grade ram either , it's not going to be used to server anything of value i just don't want to risk frying it seeing what it costed).
