What RAM for a Dell and older PC?

I have an older Socket A PC with an XP1700 and my fathers 1~ year old Dell. If I buy one of these new $80~ packages of 2x512 DDR, would I be able to split them between each computer?

Do I need to research more into each computer and buy RAM specific to them?
