Didn't occur to me to think about race. It's irrelevant.

Besides it wasn't long after I started reading the VT thread that people started saying he was Asian. Yeah AT broke the news.

But you sure were quick to jump to the conclusion that it was a male ;)

I guess that matters..

i thought it would be bed sheet white skinny lanky male with a long death metal hair cut, rubbish ankle length leather jacket and hates the world because his life sux, but there is a high probability this type would of whored his apathetic self out on myspace before slitting his wrists.

my second guess would of been a black man.

yeah, while the shooting very probably has zip all to do with race, if it was a muslim you'd of had some propaganda or somekind of home militia video going round before it happens.

thats my experience....the muslim clerics in this country always spill to papers about wanting a beslan style school massacre in UK schools and the like

and if you dont get any info before the event you defo get some whack job hate preacher claiming responsibilty and rubbing it into the polices face because they cant catch him, after its happened.

besides just going in and shooting up the shop isnt their style..... its either home made bombs, manual head hacking, or taking people hostage, parading them on tv and threating to kill them unless demands are met

After the stabbing I read about a few days ago by a disgruntled Indian student, I immediately thought he would be Indian.

Nah, I didn't expect it to be a Muslim. The Muslim's I've known have all been peaceful. I immediately pictured a disgruntled white teenager. Probably because we've had Columbine in the news so much.

I initially heard about it in a class and thought maybe ex-military (the high death count) especially since our prof made reference to the sniper at Penn State about 10 years ago (she was ex-military). I naturally assumed white kid, but pretty early on hearing the reports I heard him described as a young Asian man with a black trench coat.

Someone on these forums from Virginia Tech said yesterday that it was an Asian guy who was the perpetrator. So I took a chance, and said to the guy behind the counter, "you know it was an Asian, not a white guy that killed those people." (This was before the official announcement this morning). They all looked at me, and suddenly the laughfest was over.

I left the store wondering if my claim was true.

Well for the most part it's true.

Stereotypes aren't just put together out of thin air and spread like gossip. Groups of people statistically earn them.

Obviously the caveat with stereotypes is that not ALL white people shoot up schools. But when it's pretty much never a black or hispanic person, the logical conclusion is that when the comes to school shootings, it's typically going to be a crazy white person. Hardly anybody thinks of asians because asians typically have a sense of honor and family value in their culture and a strong will to succeed, thus the stereotype of asians being straight A students, etc. There are always exceptions of course. There is nothing wrong with stereotypes as long as you realize that. It's nothing more than a game of historical statistics, and by definition, statistics isn't a perfect science.

My first thought with the DC shooter (I refuse to call him a 'sniper' he isn't worthy of the title) was another Mcveigh.
