What purpose does this serve?

in this spot there was formerly an annoying piece of metal that appears to serve no purpose but to cut you when you try to remove it...

can someone shed some light on when exactly this would be useful?

i understand slot covers, but this seems pointless, yet almost every case i've ever seen has them

Better ventilation if you decide not to use that drive bay. If you want to use it, you have to punch it out and plug the hole with a drive.

that doesn't make sense...if it was for better ventilation, would it not make more sense to not have it there so air could pass through?

Actually it's to meet EMI Shielding requirements. They are annoying, but the case makers are required to have them there.

That's probably more true than my answer, but it actually serves both purposes...

It provides better ventilation because if that hole is NOT plugged then any active cooling mechanisms you use (fans, mostly) cannot move as much air over the components because it can escape the case in other areas. Basically the best ventilation is to have controlled air paths entering and leaving the case at the places where you want it to. The idea is to keep a steady stream of fresh air moving over hot components. If you have too many holes in your case, you get stagnant air which doesn't help at all.

Well it isn't...but I'm not one to go spouting things I don't know to be true when it comes to someone asking a tech question. I realize you probably didn't know that...my bad.

And yes they can help in thermal design.

I looked for a link for you for a bit, but I'm not sure what webpage would have that information and I didn't see anything.
