What programs use 4 cores?

Trying to decide between e8400 and q6600. What kind of programs utilize 4 cores currently?

Video encoding, graphics rendering (Cinebench,Maya,Solid Works, etc...), All distributed computing clients, photoshop premire, and a few games like Supreme Comander, UT3, MS flight sim X, and most scientific and engineering apps

And of course 4 cores help with multitasking several programs at the same time, even if they are single threaded apps
