What program would you use to edit a *.class file?

I believe this is a java file, but does anyone know of a free program one can use to edit this file?

This is a compiled file, you don't edit it you run it.

You edit *.java files in an editor (yes, even Notepad could work). Those are readable source code.

If it is a Java file, it's compiled byte-code, not Java source.

Your only option would be a de-compiler.
