I've had a western digital 40 gig go on me (happened a little while back, drive slowed to a crawl then just died)

Just today, my 60 gig drive gave a final code error... Sucky eh?

Oh well, when they work, they're really nice drives.

At my school a whole bunch of them went out. You know how they spin up & click? These just kept clicking. All the computers I built used Western Digital, no probs with those yet, but now I use Maxtor.

Also I got a 40 gig for $50 from BB on Black Friday and it seems to work fine...it did that clicking for a sec though then stopped. Makes me wary.

I've had a WD 25GB and just got a WD 120GB, both work fine. I use one of those hdd coolers if that matters. BTW, is there a certain time period they go bad? I'm wondering if it's one of those cases where if it doesn't break down in the first month it'll last a long time?

My WD 120 GB just went dead the other day. This is right around the first month mark, so fortunately, I was able to exchange it at BestBuy. I had problems with it since day 1. It had a hard time getting recognized by my BIOS, even though I have the most recent version. Then in Windows XP, it would only get recognized if I went into device manager and scan for hardware changes. Upon reboot, I had to do it again. Anyhow, just the other day, it went into the spinning and clicking thing and it was all over. Lost some valuable data.

Almost Zero problems considering how many PC's I know are around with WD drives (at least in my case)

the only problems I've had was with a 310200 10.2GB drive that failed, had all the clicking and crap.. not a huge deal. crap happens, other than that, haven't heard of too many problems, I like Maxtor and Fujitsu more, overall..

FWIW, I have had 3 die on me. The two that were replaced under warranty are still going, and both of the "refurb" replacements have lasted longer than the "new retail" versions that died. I only use Maxtor now and so far, all 5 still alive without any problems. (Knocking furiously on wood...)

I've had a WD "BA" series 20 gig for about a year now - the only probs i've had are once or twice it just randomly turned off when i was using my comp. Great HDD other than that though.

they're loud.

My 7200rpm 18gb WD was loud as hell, and I just replaced it with a seagate barracuda, but there's much newer 40gb WD in there that is still 3x louder than the seagate.

lame.

my first 18gb WD also died on me.

My 100 gb wd hard drive died on me about 1 week after I purchased it. Luckily I was able to RMA it and exchange it for a new one. Also I didn't lose any data because the Smart HD program was enabled so it detected it early. The exchanged 100 gb wd has been running smoothly for about a month now.

I've only had trouble with Quantum Fireballs. Ive had about 15 of them die at work. Man those things are aweful....most of them were in Gateway PC's.

Heh, I have 2 80GIG 7200RPM drives running in a RAID 0 setup in my rig, I have had no problems with either, one is approx 3 months old, the other 1 month, I beat on these drives, unplug them while running, have banged them (accidently) and I have had no problems. For price/performance, WD are it right now, but if you want the 'most' reliable drives then Maxtor is the way to go right now, wouldn't touch IBM with a 20ft pole after my last machine ate itself on the 75GXP series. I believe the 100GB WD drive is the fastest at sustained file transfers but i may be wrong, someone posted the stats yesterday on the fastest drives, funny that the new ATA133 drives scored lower than the 'older' ATA100s....
